Trying to format external hard drive

I am trying to format an external hard drive, but it is not showing up in disk management. I can see it in device manager as "disk drive" and under USB as a mass storage device. I am using Windows XP SP 2 with most recent updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

What brand is the Hard-Drive and what is the Model #?

Also what is the brand of the enclosure and that is its Model #?

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 200GB and the enclosure is an NEO N525U2-SL-LT NEC Chipset USB 2.0.

 

Go to the following website and either download the Windows version or use the Online one your choice. Hopefully that will setup your hardrive that way you will be able to format it.

One last beginner's question...Do I run the program from my internal drive? I would assume so, but assuming isn't always good.

 

Yes you would do this process when your in Windows with your internal and don't do anything else on your computer at the same time.

 

Ok, I will give that a try and report back with my results, probably tomorrow.

 

Well, this turned out to be a minor hardware issue. I tried several things, including the program you recommended and updating the usb and seagate drivers, to no avail.

I finally decided to remove the drive from the enclosure, connect it internally and format it that way, but when I removed the drive from the enclosure I noticed that the jumper was set to cable-select. I switched it to master and that fixed everything.
