    Good Day M/Geeks -

I once again plead for your exhalted assistance.

I'm using a Toshiba Laptop w/Win XP Home. We decided to remove program "Go Back" from PC which led to this problem the next time we restarted: Upon startup PC goes to

"Windows could not start because folowing file is missing or corrup:
    System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

After I could not start in Safe Mode, I inserted a generic Win XP cd and started from it. When I choose 'R' for repair console or if I try to do an XP Install, the PC goes to the blue screen of death and says...

    "A problem has been detected...etc" REGISTRY_ERROR

    Technical Info:
    *** STOP: 0x00000051 (0x00000004, 0x00000001, 0xE11752D8, 0xooooo1E8)

    Is it salvagable?

    Many Thanks,

    Acktom

    Thanks A -
I read over the link info, VERY much appreciated. Unfortunately I cannot get to the Recovery Console. System goes to Blue Screen mentioned in earlier thread when I choose 'R'.

    Another Way?

There is, but it starts getting complicated. If you only have one partition or drive,

    Go through this procedure:

Then, from the parallel installation, you can do that article I originally posted, from the GUI.

Then, once its all good and going, you can remove the parallel installation.

Tried a couple times to get into Recovery Console again...no avail. I'm dying!

    Any thoughts???

    Thx,

Bad Timing on the last two posts...hadn't seen your reply.

Yes A, I'm starting off the cd. When I choose 'R' to Repair or press enter to install, it goes to the blue screen.

    Am I missing a step?

    Yeah you dont press 'R'

Instead, press Escape at that screen, after the License agreement.

Sorry for the pain, appreciate the help.

I followed your instructions in earlier post. The problem is when I press F8 to Agree to License, I go to Blue screen of death. There is no option to press esc.

I load off CD, press enter to setup Win XP, press F8 to Agree to License...PC goes to Blue death Screen.

Ok, there is still hope, LOL...

Is this hard drive formatted with fat32 or ntfs?

    Again, thank you Adrynalyne.

I have burned BartPE and have now successfully started up the problem PC. Here's where the word "laimo" may come to mind. What should I do next? Should I attempt to copy the aforementioned problem file (System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys) back in?

    Gracias,

    Acktom

    Er...

You getting a pci.sys error now?

You might be looking at bad ram.

Let me know, we are halfway there to getting this licked :D

I booted up the problem system using the BartPE CD we created. It booted ok, but could not load networking. I'm not certain what step I should take next subsequent to booting w/bart. My apologies, this is my first BartPE experience.)

Dont worry about the networking thing.

In regards to the CD, it should give you a command prompt.

If not, go to start, run, and type cmd.exe

THen you can do the article I originally posted.

AD - Had a couple problems so I thought I'd stop and see if there was a missing step.
    Prob's after the cmd prompt:
    * 1st Line "md tmp" comes back - ACCESS DENIED
    * 3rd line "copy c:\windows\sytem32\config\software" - ACCESS DENIED
    * 4th line "c:\windows\tmp\software.bak" - Path not Found

Didn't want to continue unnecessarily. Do I have a security issue?

Once Again, your help is greatly appreciated.

    Run:

    chkdsk /r

  20. acktom

    acktom Private First Class

    ran chkdsk /r twice

    1st at prompt D:\i386\system32
returns with: Type of File is Raw

decided I should run at C: prompt

Returns with: type of file is NTFS
    Cannot Lock currnt drive

Chkdsk cannot run because Volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if volume is dismounted

    HELP!

    Thx AD

Help me remember--does the Bartpe CD come with a Shell?

    A GUI interface?

Yes, if you mean the xp pared down desktop.

Ok, let me put that ugly article into english.

    Navigate to C:\windows\system32\config

    Rename:

    system
    software
    sam
    security
    default

    Now navigate to C:\windows\repair

    Copy:

system (may be named system.bak, rename it accordingly)
    software
    sam
    security
    default

    to C:\windows\system32\config

    Thats part 1. Try it.

Does it matter what I rename the files to?

  28. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Nah, just keep track of them.

Its easy to just system > system.old

    etc.

    Part one complete.

Ok, see if you can boot up.

It may only work in Safe Mode.

  31. acktom

    acktom Private First Class

Unable to start normal. Unable to start in safe mode.

Error Message(same): Windows could not start because due to corruptfile
    system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

I can now, however boot from normal win XP CD and get to repair console. I can also re-install XP or so it appears. My only fear in re-installing is the possibilty of losing "My Documents".
Do you think this can be repaired at the R-Console?

May be there. Very much appreciate all of your help Adrynalyne. I used the Bart PE file manager to move files to usb drive and I'm re-installing win XP currently. All goes well for the moment. Will post the final tally.

    Thx Again.

Let me know how it goes :D

I was gonna lead you through the rest of it, but if you are gonna re-install, there is no point.
