Helping someone out with their PC, and I can ping addresses, but no web browsing. Have run AdAware, Spybot, CWShredder to no avail- obviously without updates because I can't download them. Below is my hijackthis log. I'm new here, and would appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

Normally we require you to follow all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal > before we will even consider asking you to post a HijackThis log. There is always a work around. Couldn't you have downloaded all the programs and updates on another PC and possible burned them to a CD or a USB Flashcard and gotten them to the problem PC?

At any rate, HJT logs must only be posted when requested and they must be added to your message as an attachment. Please read the tutorial in this Sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

I will change your log to an attachment for you this time so we can try to make some progress on this PC. I will look at your log and post suggestions in the next message.

Are you sure this is the complete log? Normally there are items appearing after the O12 line.

You HJT log looks okay. Have you tried flush your DNS server list?
    From the command prompt run:
    ipconfig /flushdns

Sorry I didn't read the stickys first. Thanks for your patience with the newbie.

    1. I don't know how to burn updates to a cd for adaware and spybot. I was under the assumption that these are only downloadable when connected to the net.

    2. This was the log that came up...am I doing something wrong?

    3. I'll try the DNS flush. I've already tried the winsock fix and that didn't work.

    Thanks again for your help.

Updates are downloadable too. That way you could download them elsewhere and transfer them via CD-R, floppy (if files are small enough), USB flash drive, shared drives, etc.

No you are not necessarily doing anything wrong. I'm just surprised the log stops at the O12 lines. Are you sure when you cut & pasted that you did not leave anything out? Did you check to see if you could have scrolled down for more info? Next time save the log to a file and attach the file and nothing could be missed.

Are you sure you don't have a firewall conflict? Are you using a firewall from Norton? WinXP SP2 also has one built-in that is on by default. It is not a good idea to have more than one software firewall running.

    .

Just to add one more thing to try since you have SP2 installed. You mentioned you have tried the Winsock fix. Did you use the built-in Winsock fix that comes with SP2 or a Winsock fix program?

If you did not try the SP2 Winsock fix, follow the steps below:

At a command prompt, type: netsh winsock reset

Press Enter. Wait for it to finish and reboot.

Ok, I've tried the winsock command and the DNS flush. I've run AdAware, Spybot and CWShredder with all updates. The only thing I'm getting is DSOExploit in Spybot, but I've heard that's pretty standard. Still unable to browse web. I can ping www.yahoo.com and other websites, just can't browse to them, either in IE or Firefox. I'm completely stumped- any other ideas?

Are you are hooked up to your own network (do you have a router? I assume so.). Do the following:
    - click Start, Run, and enter ipconfig /all > c:\ipinfo.txt

This will create a file in your root directory of drive C named ipinfo.txt that has info about your IP configuration. Upload it back here.

For the DSO Exploit issue get this: Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix

I've actually got it at work right now, so that explains the domain in the .txt file. It does the same thing here as at home, though. Can ping everything, but no Web.

I see from your HJT log that you are running Norton Internet Security. Can you check in this that you have your browser listed as a permitted program in the Firewall section. If it isn’t, run Program Scan and add it to the list. If that still doesn’t work – and sometimes it doesn’t – try turning off your Norton firewall, enable your MS firewall and try to get to a website. If that works, it’s Norton that’s the problem.

See the end of message #5 which I never got an answer to.

I got it....I think Norton had a firewall running that was causing a conflict with the Windows firewall. Funny thing is, in troubleshooting one of the first things I did was turn off the Windows firewall, but that didnt work then. After trying it again, though, it worked. Which would you suggest leaving on?

Thank you SOOO much for your help!

As chaslang pointed out earlier, you should only have one firewall enabled. Personally I wouldn’t rely on the XP one.

I’m not quite clear from your reply whether you can now access the web with Norton firewall [solely] enabled. If so, I’d stick to that.

I'm not sure which is a better choice. I have never look at reviews that would compare them. I know the Norton/Symantec stuff comes with a load of excess baggage and is a know resource hog. You may get more info on that question by asking for opinions in the Software Forum.

Personally I would not use either one. I would use one of the ones mentioned here: How to Protect yourself from malware!

Do you have any firewall running right now?
