I have an infection that has prevented me from being able to turn off the User Account so I am unable to proceed with Step 3 of the Read and Run me first. What should I do at this point?

If it is of any help, these are the problems I have noted since my computer became infected.

    1) Although desktop and file icons in Explorer are visible, there are no file or icon names visible except in the "folders" drop down menu were folder names are visible but not file names. Folder names are not visible in the viewing window itself.
    2) The search function from Start and in the Explorer window has been inactivated. Typing “run” in the Start search window and hitting enter causes a window to open for a split second and then close again. Typing anything else in the window and hitting enter does nothing visible at all.
    3) Windows update is disabled and now I am also unable to open the update website. I am not redirected; just can’t connect.
    4) At one point early on, I noticed that when windows log in screen appeared there was a choice to “switch users”. That was new. At the time, I checked user accounts in the task manager but only saw one account listed, my own.

The Help function from the main Start window is still operative which has allowed me access to CMD function and REGEDIT. It didn’t work for Windows Update or User Account

I have no idea how my computer became infected. It is an office computer that only I use. It was working fine when I left for vacation, and when I returned, the first thing I noticed was that my desktop resolution had changed and that there no longer where any icon names. My computer was turned off while I was away. My Malewarebytes log does not show any logs for the days I was gone. There are people who could have accessed it, but there really was no reason to, as they have their own computer and there is nothing of value or interest to anyone else on mine. I am baffled.

My Eset antivirus said I had a Win32/TrojanDownloader.Banload.LCTGMFCtrojan which it could not clear, but I was able to remove it with Kapersky’s online virus scanner.

I am running Vista on a Dell Studio 1737.

    Thank you for your assistance.

I have run both ComboFix and MGTools.exe without turning off UAC> so just try to continue on and lets see what logs you can produce.

Thanks for the help. I was able to run all the scans without difficulty despite not being able to deactivate the user account.

I am not finding any malware in your logs. You may need to post in the software forum for additional assistance. Tell me what issues you are still having.

Thanks. It is good to know that I no longer seem to have an infection.

The problem I am still having is that all icons and folders and files are missing visible names. The files themselves are not gone, just there names. If I right click and check properties, the name can be seen, or if I copy to another computer the file names are visible.

Also the search function from Start and within Explorer file window no longer works.

Did you run unhide?> Seems like I saw it in your logs.

Yes, I did, several times in fact. Question: Is unhide.exe supposed to restore the names of files, or just files that are hidden?

Another question: If my computer no longer appears to be infected, should I remove Combofix?

    Thanks for the help.

Yes, it should restore both the files and their names. You may need to post in the software forum for additional assistance. But you can check out these helpful suggestions:

Here are the clean up instructions:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
