    Hello Everyone.

I am having trouble with sharing a folder on a network. All Machines Are Windows XP Pro SP2 or SP3. They are in a workgroup. The computer that has the folder that I am trying to share I will call the server. I have set up a folder and given it what I think are the appropriate permissions. I can access the folder properly from one computer but not another. The other computer gets an error denying access. However, it is not prompting me to enter a username and password when I try to access it.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

    Thanks,

    Keyser

Did you find an answer to this?

Things that can drive you crazy but don't necessarily keep you from attaching to the share --
These usually apply when the server computer has the share set to something other than everyone. While it's advisable to avoid the everyone setting, it can be handy to add it while troubleshooting.

The computer is attached to a separate router in a different IP range (I do this every day via VPN but once in a while it doesn't work)

The user computer has a user name that is the same as a user name on the server but with a different password.

The user computer does not have a user name that matches any user on the server.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions

    General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Please Note that some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, or totally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .

In Win XP pro you can Visually see the Permission/Security setting, and configure them to your liking.

When finished with the setting of the system it is advisable to Reboot all the hardware including the Router and all computers involved.
