    Hi,
I have followed your READ & RUN ME FIRST guide in past with great success. I also regularly use the recommended tools such as SAS and MBAM to clean up any stray files on my PC, so thank you for being such a great resource. Yesterday I started having problems with unresponsive browser windows, then I couldn't close the windows or the applications (Google Chrome, Firefox). I also stared to get MSWindows style security alerts, notice that my firewall was turned off, and other signs that something bad was happening. I tried to shut down the browsers and other applications with Task Manager, got lots of "program not responding" messages. I unplugged my internet cable and turned off the PC with power switch.

I rebooted and got a sketchy looking screen about running chkdsk which I was unable to stop from running. Got back into desktop, SAS was no longer in my systray, but AVG was still running. I tried to launch MBAM, but got "access denied" error, then came here. I already had all the programs installed from the READ & RUN guide, but SAS,MBAM and Combofix would not launch. attached are logs from RootRepeal and MGtools.
I am accessing this site from a clean laptop, and have freshly downloaded all the tools onto a flash drive in case I need to reinstall on the problem PC.
Thank you for your great work, this is a terrific site.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are about 7 months out of date with your copy of MGtools. You must always download and use the current online version. We will get you updated while doing the below fix.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\9972322\Program\Updates from HP.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: karna.dat rmgmgw.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\

Now see if you can run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and ComboFix.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • the logs from SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and ComboFix if they ran.
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
Thanks again for your invaluable assistance. You are incredible! Here's what I've been able to do so far:

Ran Disable/Remove Windows Messenger, got "Delete Error" alert box with following msg: "An error occurred while deleting file C:\Program Files\Messenger\custsat.dll. The Specified procedure could not be found. (error #127)"

Followed by another alert msg "INF Install failure. Reason: The operation was canceled by the user."

Also got alert box saying "Windows Messenger has been uninstalled" So I don't know if this worked.

Successfully uninstalled older version of Java.

Got a success msg after running "fixme.reg"

Could not run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe, got alert "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I deleted the old MGtools.exe and MGtools folder. I downloaded newest version and successfully ran MGtools.exe, creating new logs and MGtools folder, but got same error when trying to run the MGtools.exe.

So should I proceed with the next step "Avenger" or try something else?

    Thank you so much!

    Hi,
As I said in my previous post, I could not get C:\MGtools\analyse.exe to run, so I decided to proceed to the next step.

Installed and Avenger script, log attached below.

Your next instruction was to install the latest Sun Java JRE, but the link you provided, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d468.html, was actually for RegHance 2.12 from LavaSoft. This confused me, so I did not install it. If you think I should install this program to help clean up my PC, I will, but please clarify. When I need to install the latest JRE, I would prefer to do so from Sun directly.

I skipped ahead and deleted the files from C:\WINDOWS\temp and C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\

Once again, SAS and MBAM would not run. I tried reinstalling them. The installations seemed to go ok, but upon running after setup, they quickly shut down as scanning commenced. Trying to run them again got the alert: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file."

ComboFix would appear to start, then quickly vanish. No logs generated for those three.

    Ran CCleaner.

Ran new version of MGtools. The logs are attached. For some reason, the HijackThis log included in the bundle is dated 1/3/09, while all the others are current. Not sure why. C:\MGtools\analyse.exe won't run, and I have a standalone version of Hijackthis which also quits before doing anything useful.

Still getting search engine redirects on the internet, so I'm keeping the LAN cable unplugged for now.
Despite your tremendous and patient help, I don't seem to have made much progress yet.

Thank you for everything, I'm anxiously awaiting your next instructions.

Okay I can now see the reason for your problems. Your C:\WINDOWS\system32\scecli.dll file (a require Windows file) as become infected. This is a new infection that has recently hit the streets. It is very nasty and difficult to remove. Before we can work up a next set of steps to try. I need you to again redownload the new version of MGtools from the same link previously given. It was just updated to help us with this particular infection. Run it and then attach the new log.

Hello again, and thanks for your continuing efforts on behalf of all of us unlucky enough to be afflicted with these nasty things.

I downloaded and ran the updated MGtools.exe, logs are attached. As before, the hijackthis.log in the zip is showing an old scan date. I was able to get a stand-alone version of HijackThis to install and run long enough for me to get a screen shot of some results before it shut down. I can attach a .jpg of this if you think it will help.

I have had AVG turned off as per instructions while trying to run these tools, but did reactivate it briefly to check the history log, and copied this info:
    Resident Shield detection

    Trojan horse Clicker.AAPC; "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Quarantine\Quarantine - 08-07-2009 - 11-51-25\{381FE23B-212A-41E0-8C6C-8E83D45A7348}"; "Infected"; "8/7/2009, 11:51:26 AM"; "file"; "C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERANTISPYWARE.EXE"

Trojan horse Injector.FB; "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACd.sys"; "Moved to Virus Vault"; "8/7/2009, 11:03:15 AM"; "file"; "System"

I also realized that, although SuperAntiSpyware appeared not to run when I tried to launch it, it did generate some logs, which I have attached.

Many thanks for your valuable time and expertise.

I see you logged in!! Please do the below so I can get a log from a new version of MGtools just posted.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Now attach the new c:\MGlogs.zip file

If you have not already acted on my last message, just skip it and do the below:

Since you were previously able to run Avenger without it being blocked by the malware, let's see if we can use it again.

We will see if it can rename the bad file and replace it with a valid file. Also we will attempt to have Avenger run ComboFix automatically at reboot time. Not sure if this will actually will work but be prepare to see ComboFix and allow it to run if you see it pop up.

    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
Thanks for being so diligent. I was able to run Avenger with the script you provided, and am attaching the log. The pc rebooted itself, and launched ComboFix, yay!

I had my AVG disabled, but it restarts itself upon reboot, so I got a warning msg from ComboFix to turn it off. I disabled AVG from the sys tray console, it appeared to turn off, and then I clicked "OK" on the ComboFix dialog box, but then I got another warning that AVG was still running. Anyway, ComboFix did run, and I'm attaching the log.

I installed and ran the newest version of MGtools, it seemed to go fine. The log is attached.

I had to go to work after running these scans, so I haven't had a chance to see if anything has changed on my PC.

Thank you sooooooo much for your help, it looks like we are making some progress.

    You're welcome.

First please uninstall both Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware and delete any previous copies of their installers that you may have downloaded.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now download, install, update and try to run scans using the below links for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes:
Now delete all files and subfolder in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the SAS and MBAM logs if they ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,
The first time I tried running the ComboFix + script, I got a warning that AVG was still scanning, even though I had disabled it. So I un-installed AVG to keep it from interfering.
Then I ran ComboFix with the script you provided, seemed to go smoothly, log file attached.

Then I cleaned up any remaining traces of old installs of SAS and MBAM. I downloaded new versions of both, then installed, updated and ran each.

This time they each completed their scans successfully. SAS didn't find anything, MBAM found three infected objects and took care of those. Logs for both are attached.

The C:\WINDOWS\temp folder was already empty except for two recent files. Next I ran Ccleaner.

Finally I ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and the .zip file is attached.

I can now run both SAS and MBAM so far without any problems, so that is a big improvement.

However, I have a bad copy of Hijackthis at C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.exe which I still cannot run, I get the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file." I also can't rename, move or delete it, getting a "permission denied" error. I'd like to get rid of this somehow.

I'm looking forward to my next instructions.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should not be running this and this is not the correct location to put this.

    • Delete the C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.exe file.
    • Now also delete this folder if it exists: C:\Program Files\TrenMicro\HijackThis
    • Now run the below registry patch:
Copy the bold text below to notepad.

Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator ) Watch for a TrendMicro HijackThis license agreement popup. If you get one, click the Accept button twice (yes twice). If you don't see this license agreement, make sure you tell me.

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Are you having any malware issues?

    Chas Lang,
Thank you, but as said in my last post:

I haven't been using this tool, (the malware disabled it) I think I tried to install/run it various times in desperation before seeking help from this forum.
I have no TrendMicro folders, as I was able to delete other attempts at getting HJT installed. For some reason, that one file is stubborn.

Other than lack of access to delete that file, I have not noticed any other malware symptoms, and I have not had any search engine re-directs when using the internet. I have basically been not using that computer until I am sure it is clean and protected.

So should I go ahead with the regedit fix you gave me, even though I can't delete the C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.exe file? Or can you instruct me in another way to remove it before running the regedit?

    Thanks!

Okay then let's try fixing these items a using ComboFix.

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I ran the ComboFix script you gave me, I got a prompt to download a CF update, which I did. CF then updated, restarted and ran. The log is attached.

The combofix script took care of the old C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.exe, :)

I then launched Ccleaner, it too requested an update, so I downloaded the latest version and ran the cleaner.

Then I replaced the previous MGtools with the latest one and ran it. I did not get the TrendMicro HijackThis license agreement popup. :confused

It ran a scan and log zip is attached.

    Thanks!

Goto the C:\MGtools folder and locate the analyse.exe file. Right click on it and select Open. Tell me what happens.

    Hi,

I right clicked and selected open on C:\MGtools\analyse.exe and I get the error msg "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item."

I looked at the properties of the file and it says date last accessed was 8/12/09, so maybe it didn't get updated when I installed the newest MGtools even though all the other items in that file are fresh.

I could not delete the locked-up C:\MGtools\analyse.exe file by itself, but I was able to delete the C:\MGtools folder containing it. So then I saved a new copy of MGtools.exe to the C:\ drive, ran it and finally it generated a fresh version of C:\MGtools\analyse.exe, along with a new set of logs, this time including a hijackthis.log with the current date/time.

Attattached is the latest zip of MGlogs.

    Thank you.

It's the same version and same exact file. There just may have been something wrong with the permissions on the file that was there before.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
