I first noticed the problem yesterday and it is similar to what others have been experiencing recently. I did a quick search of the forum but didn't seem to find any solutions. MBAM scan returned nothing, as did Norton.

RootRepeal failed to run with error FOPS - DeviceIOControlError! Error Code = 0xc0000024

I believe there was also an error with HijackThis while running MGTools although I failed to record exactly what it was.

    Thanks for any help!

Since others with rootkit type infections seem to be asked to do this, here's my MBRCheck results:

    MBRCheck, version 1.1.1

    (c) 2010, AD

    \\.\C: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

    Size Device Name MBR Status

    --------------------------------------------

232 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Unknown MBR code

    Found non-standard or infected MBR.

Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, eyron

Now if you wish to continue and fix the malware - please do the following:
    • Run MBRCheck.exe
    • Wait until you see the following lines:

      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
      • Options:
[1] Dump the MBR of a physical disk to file.
[2] Restore the MBR of a physical disk with a standard boot code.
        [3] Exit.
        Enter your choice:
    • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
    • When the program asks you to Enter your choice: enter 2 to Restore the MBR and press the Enter key
    • Now the program will ask you to "Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel):"
      • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
    • The program will show Available MBR codes
    • Please enter 5 for Windows 7 and press the Enter key
    • The program will prompt for confirmation. Type 'YES' and hit Enter.
    • Left click on the title bar (where program name and path is written). From menu chose Edit -> Select All
    • You will see all the text in the window get highlighted.
    • Hit the Enter key on your keyboard to copy all of the text into the clipboard.
    • Paste that text into Notepad, save it to your desktop as MBRfix.txt
    • Restart your PC.
    • Attach the MBRfix.txt file to your next message..

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately I wasn't patient enough to wait for a reply so restored the MBR on my own, without saving the log. I've checked and the MBR is now identified as Windows 7. The problem has gone away as far as I can tell, but would any remnants of the infection be left behind which could slow down the PC? I've run CCleaner and Anti-MalwareBytes which turned up nothing, as well as ditching Norton for AVIRA as it's missed one too many infections :p

    Thanks again!

    You're welcome.

;) That's why I had you provide another MGLogs.zip, to look for any stragglers and to tidy up if needed. I'll review your logs after work this afternoon.

    Hello, eyron

*You need to run MSconfig and put your PC into normal startup mode as requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME guide.

Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode

Question: What can you tell me about this:
    c:\users\Tom\.shsh

    Step 1:
Please run the below tool > re-boot > run it again.
    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) 2009.0.5.26

    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"
