Unused Memory

Ok, ive done defragments, and numerous other tools but theres like 12 gigs not being used on my pc. when i click on drive c it says...

Free Space: 116
Total Space: 148

but when i go into drive c and highlight all the files and click properties it tells me 20 gigs, but 148 - 116 is 32 :|, does anyone know what might be the problem?

 

If your computer is from one on the major manufacturers, then this is understandable, as they generally create a restore partition, and it will usually be on C: if your computer only has one hard drive. Don't confuse RAM and system storage space as a lot of people do.

Another thing that causes discrepancies is that Hard Drive makers measure capacity in decimal.
Microsoft measures capacity in binary.
ie. Hard drive maker says drive is 100 GB =100,000 MB = 100,000,000 KB = 100,000,000,000 Bytes.
MS says 100 GB = 107,374,182,400 Bytes.
So windows always shows your hard drive to be smaller than what you bought.
My 100 GB hard drive would show as less than 93GB useable in windows.
Western Digital just settled a law suit over this.

So if Disk dfragmenter reports 1 gb available, is there really more than that?
