Running XP. Though start menu is set to allow for x number of recently visited applications, each time start menu is opened the 'some items cannot be shown' information tip pops up even if the menu isnt filled with the selected number of shortcuts. How can I defeat this recurring information tip? It should only appear when the maximum selected number of programs has been exceeded and some are hidden on the start menu.

    You could try this:

How to remove the Some items cannot be shown Balloon:
Right-click the task bar, choose Properties, click the Start menu tab, and click the Customize button. In the middle, there's a control labeled Number of programs on Start menu. Click the Start button, count the menu items below the line, and set this value to match. If there aren't programs below the line then just set the value to 0 Click OK, click Apply.

How to remove the New Program Installed Balloon :
Right-click the task bar, choose Properties, click the Start menu tab, and click the Customize button. click the Advanced tab and under the section that says Start menu settings uncheck the box that says Highlight newly installed programs. Click OK and then click Apply.

Regardless of the set number of program shortcuts on the start menu, this unwanted information tip still comes up with each new incidence of clicking the start menu.

Tried all the suggestions, no change. Ran System File Checker and rebooted but nothing was reported.
