My computer has a P55A-UD3 mobo, bios version 7. At the Gigabyte website
    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3439#bios
there is a version 11 available, which I downloaded. But:
    a) - I have no idea how to install the files I extracted from the download - an autoexec file,a FLASHPI file, and a file named p55aud3.f11. And
    b) - the site itself says NOT to update the bios if the present one is working okay.
What are the signs that the bios needs updating? As far as I can see the computer is working as it should.
I thought keeping your bios up to date was just as important as keeping your anti-virus (for example) up to date.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, Gregoryno6.

    Heed the warnings.

BIOS updates (as well as most driver updates) are usually written to address specific problems, and are not general updates, per se. Antivirus program definitions, on the other hand, are routinely updated to address the constant flux that is present in the malware world.

If your machine is running smoothly, then leave it alone - especially when referring to the Basic Input/Output System.

If you have no problems, then as Caliban says, leave it be.
The later bios versions are specifically for the following- so if these do not apply- don't temp fate,
especially if you have not updated a bios before now on another computer/laptop.
Bios updates can go wrong if you do not follow the instructions to the letter, if it is updated directly from the file-:cry
Gigabyte tech at the forum had a querie on a badly flashed bios , and this was part of his reply

"in the normal course of events QFlash the BIOS utility is much safer"
    So, be careful

F9 .Improve Intel Turbo Boost compatibility

Incidently, this little link through Gigabyte's forum might interest others, if not Gregoryno6 (might confuse you more),as this year it seems UEFI is to replace the BIOS as a startup to pc's.:confused
This seems at present limited ti Intel processors, but may well be for AMD, too- worth a read?

Thank you Caliban and baklogic for your warnings, which I will heed. Gigabyte include a little program called @BIOS on the disk that came with the mb, I have ignored it until now and that was obviously the correct strategy.

The UEFI will be a great leap forward when it's available. I wonder if the techheads will devise a retrofit for older computers.

I would think that would be very difficult, but life is full of surprises
