good day to you guys :)

im new here to major geeks, i managed to find it because i was trying to look for a solution to my problem, i found the read&run me and decided to give it a shot and post it here, along with the problems

now before the problems started (last 2-3 days ago) the only thing i remember doing out of the norm was looking for instructions on building a free website for beginners, probably one of my search entries ended up doing that

of course it could have been a dormant problem just waiting to show up, i dont really have an idea since, since this is my sisters computer and its 1 year old so im not aware of any history it may have had

i became first aware of it with my yahoo messenger not logging in, it just keeps giving the wrong password screen, except that i could still log in to the web version perfectly with the same log in, tried reinstalling but then came more problems, after downloading its installer its not installing like it doesnt have connection to the internet

then i noticed its not the only one suffering problems, biggest problem so far is it now refuses to update antivirus programs, i tried swapping antivirus and antispyware programs and ended up with AVG (since, odd as it seems its the only antivirus program that could still update itself)

also certain websites shows as http 404 to internet explorer (example is when i tried getting it a security fix) but the page is actually working when i use something else (opera, firefox)

attached are the logs, the problems still there after the process, so im at my wits end on what to do, please help me :(

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix again.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now! If you are still having problems, make sure that it is not due to your PC Tools Firewall by temporarily disabling the firewall.

hey there! i was eagerly waiting for this :) sure is worth the wait!

i did everything on the list and quickly went to reinstalling yahoo messenger as a test after (without using the offline installer) and logged it in, it worked like a charm! i redownloaded AVAST since i prefer it over AVG

will do some more checking since it isnt new for the problem to not show up for a few hours or so (or even a day) and then suddenly come back again

planning to keep PC tools firewall and Avast , and err perhaps anything else you might suggest?

attached are the logs requested for, thank you very much for the help! i really appreciate it

At this point it is looking like your problems are not due to malware. Especially if things start out working and then stop working. I want to ask a few questions and run one more fix and also run a couple other scans just to cover all bases, but you could be having non-malware problems.

What are the below for and do you still use the software?
Also what is the below software driver you have loading? Is this game related?
    S3 GarenaPEngine;GarenaPEngine;\??\c:\docume~1\User1\LOCALS~1\Temp\LNE24C.tmp --> c:\docume~1\User1\LOCALS~1\Temp\LNE24C.tmp [?]

Is the below something you installed? Is it related to some kind of VPN software?
    S3 tap0801;Smarthide TAP driver;c:\windows\system32\drivers\tap0801.sys [10/1/2006 8:37 PM 55808]

    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run this procedure: Using Dr.Web CureIt

Also run this: Running GMER to detect rootkits

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the log from Dr.Web CureIt
    • the log from GMER
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
