Usb Mass Storage Device

Please can somebody help????

I bought an MP3 player that came with a disk to install drivers for Win 98,
which was my current operating system, I installed the drivers & connected the MP3 Player via USB, and my computer stopped responding, when I task manager it says "MSGSRV32 not responding", I tried to reinstall & still wouldn't work, but it worked on another PC. I was advised to upgrade to Windows XP as it is meant to be a lot more compatible with USB devices. I have now upgraded to windows XP & It still wont work. I even took the MP3 Player back & bought a better one, & It still wont work, which leads to believe it might be something to do with my hardware, the USB is all enabled in BIOS & there is enough power going to it, it is quite an old computer but it meets all the system requirements required. I just don't know what to do? The motherboard has built in sound & graphics, even tried disabling onboard sound to see if that worked, but NO. Has anyone come accross this problem?

There are lots of suggestions on the web, that say it may be something to do with power management or conflicting programmes, but It's none of these,
I think I need to maybe upgrade the Drivers for my BIOS / Motherboard, but as the PC was given to me I don't have the manual & this may seem like a dumb question but how can I find out the exact spec & name of my mother board? As when I open it up it just has all the makes of the chipsets etc.
