My o/s is XP sp2 and I am thinking about upgrading to high speed internet since I only have dial up and my local phone service is offering me a good deal with a free modem. My question is that can you use a usb to ethernet adapter instead of a nic to connect to the external modem? I don't have a nic and my motherboard only has two slots which are both being used. Thanks for any feedback.

The free modems usually only come with USB connections anyway. It is unlikely that any broadband ISP will offer an ethernet only modem/router.

Yes you can use DSL USB Modem and the USB port on your computer.

However, take into consideration that if you want to use more than one computer, or have, or plan to add Wireless, you would be in big trouble since there is no Wireless Cable/DSL Routers with USB WAN input.

You are much better of buying a USB to Ethernet converter, plug it to the USB port on your computer and use a regular Ethernet Modem.

BTW, it is advisable to use a Cable/DSL Router even if you do not have Wireless and more than one computer.
