Using DVD-R's To Store Data - Is It Possible?

I have two 4.7gb DVD-R discs which say 'DVD Recordable' on them and I have around 8gb of music that I want to store on them until after I format my PC, as I don't want to lose the music.

The discs are completely blank as I have just bought them but when I put them into my DVD/CD Rom drive they don't seem to be recognised.

Normal blank 700mb CD's are recognised fine and I can burn data to them but I don't know what's wrong with the DVD-R discs.

Is there a way of burning data to them on my PC as I'm hoping to start building my new PC today but the shops aren't open until after Boxing Day so I can't buy any mre 700mb CD's until then.

Yes you can burn data on dvd's.
You can use nero 6 or 7 to burn data dvd's.
If you don't have nero 6 or 7, You can download a trial version at http://www.nero.com/enu/index.html

 

Assuming you have a DVD drive capable of Burning DVD's, you can save any type of data to DVD.

Nero 6, IMO is the Best Burning program

I started burning 4gb worth of files onto a blank 4.7gb DVD (using Nero 7) about 30 minutes ago and it still says 0% although it says 'Burn Process Started'

Whats your system specs? include DVD burner info.

 

Depending on how old your system is your CD/CDrom drive but be a combo unit that cannot write DVD's. When DVD writers were expensive many companies put out CD writers that could read DVD's but not write them.

In nero 7 if you choose use Nero Express and then New Project and then Data does it give you an option of DataDVD? If it does then your drive can write DVD's if it doesn't your drive can't write Dvd's.
