The memtest I'm running is bootable and on the first screen it states that the processor is an i7 running at 2993? It's an i5 2320 cpu. Is this an error in the memtest -86 v3.5 app, or is my cpu secretly an i7 ?

I recommend MemTest86 instead. The program you are using is very old (2009). The MemTest86 I linked to is still under constant development to maintain currency with the latest hardware. The Memtest86+ suggested is also out of date having last been updated in 2013 before DDR4 came out.
