version of windows may not be genuine?

    I have xp and recently downloaded an anti-virus that my isp gave me for free...i got what i paid for...now i get messeges saying i dont have a genuine version of windows...my pc runs slow ( i have 5 mg cable ). and lots worse than before.i uninstalled the anti-virus but no help.
    how do i get this straightened out without calling a cable technician , which will probably take weeks to get out to fix it?
