Very persistent virus/worm Ramnit

    Heya
I've been attacked by the ramnit worm. (More)
What it seems to do is check all the drives on the infected computer for html files and insert itself. This causes a slow down and vast amounts of alerts from Spyware Doctor.
It also polls the FDD every couple of seconds, making activity quite obvious.
Investigating further, I found that it launches an exe with the name of the default browser (in my case chrome) although if you kill that process it will launch Iexplore.exe.
It seems to be spreading via svc files. Every time I ran an exe file a copy of the virus would be created in the same directory, but as a svc extension. (EG: MBM.exe becomes MBMsvc.exe)
This means that even simple things such as finding files or running AV software sets off the worm again.

On top of this, it seems that it also alters the hosts file, to deny access to google and other search engines.

I have run all the tests, and although they picked up on some SVC files as well as the infected htm files, none of them got the memory resident part.
It does seem to have a persistent reg entry :
Although I can fix this entry and delete the file while the worm is not 'active' they return as soon as I reboot, or attempt to open/close files.

There are similar threads Here and Here which, whilst useful, is slightly beyond my skill set to adapt.

Having got so far, yet unable to remove this little bugger is really infuriating, please help!

PS: I've included all the logs except rootkit repeal as all it did was launch into init, use 100% cpu and 2GB of memory and seemed to hang. I did wait for 15 minutes, but with no progress. Is this normal behaviour?

Spyware Doctor 7.0 <--- Is this paid for software or just a trial? Uninstall if a trial.

Are these something you know about? If not please delete them if you are able to:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know how things are running now and do NOT forget to address any questions I may have asked. :)

    Heya, Thanks for helping.

Spyware doctor is paid for and up to date.

I did not know about those files, however whist waiting I ran MbAM on full search and it caught the avi. The other file deleted fine. (log provided)

I used HJT and fixed the offending entry, after another scan, it was still gone.

However as soon as I started combofix, the virus started about 6 processes. As combofix closes all open windows I was unable to stop the virus.
Combofix continued on, found rootkit files and rebooted.
After the reboot I could tell the virus was running, but I left combofix to finish up.
After another reboot, combofix seemed to hang whist creating the log file. After about 20 minutes, I opened up task manager, stopped the virus process and combofix started to produce its logs.
During the mgtools log process I got the error modmain_fixunix(hostsfile()) #70 Permission denied.
I ran HostsXpert and reverted the hosts file back to original.

I deleted what I could from the temp directories, there are a few files left.

    The virus is still present.

    Changes:

MbAM seems to have been removed, I thought spyware doctor had it in quarantine, but it only has MbAMsvc.exe.

Whilst typing this I have had 3 or 4 explorer ad-popups. Hopefully this isn't another attack.

Also, whilst I tried to attach files, I can't open the browser within Chrome. Lucky someone knows how to code correctly..

    Hmmm, let's battle on...

    1. Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    2. Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Reboot the machine into safemode, and once in, use windows explorer to find and delete the following files if present:

    6. Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    7. Reboot back into normal mode again:

Run this: GMER - running with a random name

    8. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    9. Also attach the log from MBRCheck and gmer.

    10. Let me know how things are running.

  6. Rattus

    Rattus Private E-2

    Ok,

    1. I ran the KDSS killer. it found an infected system file and fixed it.
    2. I ran MBRchecker and it came back normal
    3. Ran HJT, removed the offending entries closing it however set off an iexlorer ad. Stopping that, i opened hjt again and the O4 entries had returned. I removed them, tested, closed hjt and set off combofix.
    4. As soon as CF was launched, the virus activated. I closed CF at the acceptance screen, ran hjt and found that the O4 entries would not be removed.
    5. Launched CF again, and just let it get on with it. (CF wants to update everytime? This does not seem right) As soon as it started scanning the virus was not running. It found 2 infected system files. the first it cured, the second (ctfmon.exe) I'm unsure of as it rebooted the machine.
    6. Upon reboot CF did not restart, so no logs were taken. The virus was launched at start up.
    7. Rebooted into safe mode, and the virus was still launched at startup. Killing the process, which restarted every time I navigated anywhere with my computer. Deleting desktoplayer.exe stopped that. I also deleted explorersvc. The other files were not present.
8.Ran the regedit fixme and got a success message.
    9. Rebooted but log in and then immediately I'm logged out. HELP!!

  7. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Is this in normal mode that you are logged out of? This malware is extremely sly. How about you just get me new MGLogs.zip by running the getlogs.bat in safe mode so I can get a fresh look on what's going on.

Attach also the tdsskiller log and the log from MBRCheck.

Nope, can't logon with safemode either.
i'm guessing that the reg entry from winlogon (?) is missinng or corrupt somehow.
using the recovery console, userinit.exe is present.
if I could run getlogs from there I would.

  9. Rattus

    Rattus Private E-2

Ok, at risk of bumping, I'll inform you on what I've been doing the last 6 hours. (I would edit my last post but you can't do that here)
    1. Using the recovery console I noticed that both explorer and userinit had grown in size so I replaced them with the originals. Made no difference.

    2. I copied userinit to the virus named desktoplayer.exe. Still no change.

    3. Using an offline reg editor, I checked the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    4. I'm currently attempting a repair install from the XP CD. Then I'm going to bed.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Hmm.. it is halfway through the repair and the FDD is being polled again. Guess I'vee still got the bugger. :(

    Rattus Private E-2

    Ok, start again!

After the repair install, I could at least log in. Everything seems back to normal, although the worm is still present.
I ran though the read me first tests and for good measure RMER and KDSSkiller

MbAM was put on full scan and I aborted after 7 hours, but it did catch some things.
I also lost my mouse drivers and had to reinstall them. This might be a nvidia driver issue tho.

I'm going to run a full spyware doctor scan, whist I wait for a reply. I'll let you know how it goes.

What do you know of this?

and this? If you don't know delete the bold file.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    d:\windows\ExplorerSrv.exe
    d:\program files\microsoft\desktoplayer.exe
    D:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\temp\GUR5.tmp
    D:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\temp\1C.tmp
    d:\documents and settings\postgres.MOTHER.000\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\udyr.exe

    Folder::
    d:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Raydk
    d:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Wobu
    d:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Voebo
    d:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Bugin
    d:\documents and settings\Paul\Application Data\Ecpox
    D:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Application Data\Izeh

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\services]
    "nsdqe"=-

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and don't forget to answer any questions that I asked.

It's malware. And so is the below startup which needed to be removed or the malware will likely just return.

    d:\documents and settings\postgres.MOTHER.000\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\udyr.exe

    Damn, thought so :(

@ Rattus - You have time to let me edit the fix or have you already run it?

(I gotta run to work in 10 mins)

edited to add items. Gotta run now.

I was running through the fix, so I didn't get the reg entry.
I deleted the file, but I don't know anything about those user names (Postgres) I assume they are an artefact from the repair install.

I ran HJT and the items refused to be moved, but whats with all the ctfmon stuff? Is that normal?

I ran the combofix, everything went fine but I've lost my ps2 mouse and keyboard when widows runs. Luckly I can use USB ones for now.

As far as I can tell, there does not appear to be any differance, the malware is alive and well.

    Ok Smoky,

Ran HJT, the O4 entry refused to be fixed
ran combo fix, which ran with no hiccups. Although there is now a combofixsvc.exe on the desktop. It is obviously the virus, and describes itself as bit defender control center.

Virus is still present, I told you it was persistant!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.

    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * C:\Avenger.txt

i used avenger as advised, but upon reboot, windows does not load. Not even in safe mode or even 'last working configuration'

    What next?

Ok, after another windows repair install, I'm back up and running.
During the install avenger set off and gave me a log. Not sure how useful it is tho.

I ran combofix (without the script) and it crashed the machine after updating.
I check the drives and tried again with success.
    I also ran getlogs too.

The virus is still present, but hopefully we can get the bugger before the w/e is out.

    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

  23. Rattus

    Ok that was quick.
Whist waiting for a reply I ran MBAM. That got a few items, and might explain how some items are missing.
Ran avenger and got a error along the lines of "This program is only allowed to edit Local_machine hive in registry"
    I continued regardless.
BitDefender picked up some new items, but missed the virus in memory. Guess this goes really deep..
I've got the mgtool logs too.

The thing is this little beasty triggers itself off of any exe ran, including those at startup, and all the tools.
Is there any way to scan without actually loading windows? Or stopping it from doing that whist we clear the drives?

Now, if you can use a different computer, make this boot disc:
Kaspersky Rescue Disk. You will need to go into your bios and make your cd/dvd drive the first boot option and then boot to this disc.

Once done, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Ok After some trouble I've managed to run the rescue disk.
It seems to have flagged all .exe and .dll files, most of which are either type_win32 or packed.win32.krap.hm
Most of these files require deletion. Doing so would probably wreak the OS.
    Please advise.

  26. TimW

That's what I was afraid of. That it has spread to your exe files and system files. We could spend a lot of time trying to remove this infection, but odds are that it will not work because the nature of the infection has so many executable system files infected that as soon as we fix one file, other files that are infected will almost immediately or upon the next reboot, just reinfect the files. In addition, your PC would still basically be unreliable/untrustworthy even if we manage to fix the infected files that we can see since there could be many more that we are not seeing.

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possibly become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected. Anything you may have already backed up that is an executable type file (things you downloaded to install programs....etc) are most likely infected and will cause you to be reinfected if you reuse these files.

Once you backup, you need to format partitions and reinstall Windows and all other software especially your protection software. Then install all updates for all software. DO NOT reinstall from any executable file backups you made while this PC was infected or you will just be reinstalling the infection.

    Balls! :(
Why didn't the mass of anti malware software I've run (spy doctor, MBAM, SAS, etc) not spot this?
Thanks for all your help, I only wish we knew this a week ago, ad saved myself time and money.

If you haven't formatted yet, can you attach the log from Kaspersky as I think maybe we can just remove all files that have now got a svr in the name, as in:
    analyseSrv.exe

  29. Rattus

    Rattus Private E-2

    Sorry, too late.
I did look through the files but there was no way of telling which were evil and which were not. Besides its been a week and I couldn't miss another day of work.
I'm slowing reinstalling as I type.

  30. TimW

It's probably for the best as we are further studying the effects of this virus and starting to see that it is not only creating the false files with the SRV in the name, but also it looks like it is corrupting the original files as well. Hope the reformat goes well and you are soon back up and running. ;)
