    Kinda interesting how this happened.

I installed the freeware AVAST Anti-virus software when it asked me the question “Would you like to re-boot” I selected the Ok button. I was installing this software to get rid of a few viruses Charters free anti-virus software would not get rid of. Ya, I know DUMBASS!

NOW my computer is in a loop. It continuously re-boots.

I can enter my password and get to my desktop for about 10 seconds before it re-boots. Even if I do not enter my password it will automatically re-boot on the logon screen.

It’s to the point to where I think there is something wrong with my hard drive.

I cannot start in safe mode. I press F8 but I cannot navigate in the menu "up and down arrows" to get to safe mode. The keyboard is disabled.

I know the keyboard is working because I can quickly open a word document in the 10 seconds that I do have and navigate within it. The up and down arrows work but the arrows will not work in the F8 menu.

Ever hear of a virus that will disable a keyboard?

Any suggestions of how to get rid of this?

    F.Y.I. I am running XP.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

While it is possible that malware could have had a hand in being the cause of your problem, it could also be due to some form of registry corruption. The symptoms you mention can occur if the registry key that loads the userinit.exe file or the file itself has been removed. The standard fix is the below:

Obviously you will need your Windows XP boot CD to get to the Recovery Console unless you had previously installed the Recovery Console on your PC.

There is really not much we can do for you in the Malware Forum unless your PC is bootable. It would really be better for you to work this in the Software Forum. Once you can boot your PC and login, we can help you check for malware.

Thanks! But does this mean you have been able to get your PC bootable again?

Have not had a chance to get to it yet but I'm hoping I can boot from my disk. If not "SHT" Guess I'll try something else.

Your Windows boot CD is your best option.
