This is quite a simple question ... ... but how does the video card's memory relate to the supported memory of the motherboard? If the motherboard says it supports ddr2 can I run a video card with ddr4? Or are the video card's and the mother board's memory speeds independent of each other.

they are independent of eachother :)so ddr2 board runs video with ddr3 or 4 no problems

The two are not related, actually. It got a bit confusing when video cards released DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3, DDR4 etc, but those are not the same as system DDR-2 and DDR-3 memory.

In short, you can run any graphics card that is supported by your motherboard's graphics slot (PCI, AGP, or PCI-Express), regardless of graphics memory specs.
