video decompression/ video editing

    Doing my best to find free software that will edit large avi files. I have not been successful with Blaze, AVS, or Vdub. Vdub says i cannot decompress the file. AVS and Blaze simply do not display the video when it is played. I have no money to buy a software package and can't stand downloading updates from Microsoft. Any suggestions?
