video encoding/decoding

    hi everybody i was just wondering can anyone help me with video encoding software.I recently recieved a dvd of videos all encoded in the xvid format.does anybody know what is the best/safest programme availble for decoding all major video formats(incl xvid).and what is the best/safest programme for compressing.encoding dvds.appreciate the help thanks.:)
