Everyone has to have a first message & this is mine.
I've followed every single step from 0 to 6b

I'm really hoping for miracles or so my friend is. Never will I do this again. What she told me was the problem should have been fixed in a few minutes (popups). She failed to tell me that these were virus popups -- initially it was hacktool.proxy and msvct.exe. Now I get csrss.exe problem.

I will begin to attach the logfiles.

This second post will have more logs attached.

Note that there is not "counterspy.txt" as when I ran CounterSpy I did not have any access to the contents of the scan in the window. I just re-read & saw that I should have run AVGScan which I did just before uploading the file. Unfortunately I am not in safe mode. I hope this doesn't affect you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are missing a bunch of logs and you need to re-run AVG Antispyware. You told it to Ignore the malware it found instead of Quarantining or Deleting. Run it again and this time Quaratine everything.

You also need to attach the other logs requested in the READ ME:
    • Panda Scan - from step 6a
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat - step 6b
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat - step 6b
    • HijackThis - from step 7

I'm sorry, but I was sure that I had added these files (and the one in the next post) to my 1st post. I will run the AVGscan again in safe mode & attach in another post.

    Thanks.

    Here's the last file.
I will run the AVGscan again in safe mode & post the log. (tomorrow, it's getting late)

    Thanks again,
    Linda

I see both of the below installed:
    AVG 7.5
    CA eTrust Internet Security Suite

Per step 3 of the READ ME, you must only have one antivirus application installed. You must uninstall one of these now. Is CA eTrust even working properly?

Please download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program
Now run this procedure: ChodeFix - How download and run

Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Also make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of cecjfvwd.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the cecjfvwd.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of cecjfvwd.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of cecjfvwd.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX
until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0199DF25-9820-4bd5-9FEE-5A765AB4371E} - (no file)
    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\System32\oloektsz\csrss.exe
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\System32\oloektsz\csrss.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ?
    O16 - DPF: {4F1E5B1A-2A80-42CA-8532-2D05CB959537} (MSN Photo Upload Tool) - http://by107fd.bay107.hotmail.msn.com/resources/MsnPUpld.cab
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/157780ebb165562ea221/netzip/RdxIE601.cab
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: kxydpusvrnp - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cecjfvwd.dll

NOTE: HJT will popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
    • select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\oloektsz\csrss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cecjfvwd.dll
    c:\windows\system32\INNERADINSTALL.LOG
    C:\Documents and Settings\Maria\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bin\2003.exe
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But if you do get this message, please let me know!)

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\oloektsz

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

You're welcome Linda! Just attach the logs when you finish and also tell me if you had any problems while running the steps! Also tell me your current status after completing the steps! Also answer my question about CA eTrust.

    Hi again,

Thanks for all your help. I've attached the print screen from chodefix.
Also I used green for the font where I replied to your quote.

So far so good the csrss.exe popup didn't happen on re-boot.

    thanks & thanks & thanks.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Now run Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where you extracted all the files from ChodeFix.zip. Locate the fixChode.reg file and double click on it and allow it to add to the registry. Tell me if you receive a success message.

Then attach a new log from GetRunKey.

    Is everything still working OK!

Do you realize that your version of Windows is way out of date and represents a major security risk and that it is also very susceptible to many infections?

I didn't run an update as the owner of this machine does not have a licence, that she knows of! And I was afraid that the updates might not work because of the state of the computer!

You forgot to attach the log from GetRunKey! Make sure it is a new log!

If the owner does not have a license and does not get upgraded, then they are using an OS with dozens of security holes and they are going to constantly get infections. Some of which could be much worse than what was just removed.

I will just update xp & let her deal with it!

And how do you plan on doing that if she does not have a license.

    The GetRunKey log is clean.

    Hi Yah,

I told "friend" she'd need to get a licence. I even suggested another friend who is in the "computer business" -- I'm just more of a geek than some & am willing to make efforts to learn! She went to him & got the licence figuring that I'd do it for her!!! I'm a softee, pushover or whatever, but I guess I like to help! Can you help me with that? or will I need to search elsewhere on "majorgeeks"?

By the way she is very pleased that the machine is "clean".

    Thanks again to you,
    Linda

    Help with what?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi yah,

Is there a way to change the xp product key when there is no xp cd?
I will perform the steps you gave me.
    Thanks,

    Linda

Wrong forum! Try the Software Forum, but you are going to be asked how you have a product key and no CD. This actually sounds like you are using someone else's license to me and it will sound the same to anyone in the Software Forum. No one will help you do something illegal. If you have a valid license and cannot get it registered, you should probably speak with Microsoft.

    Hi yah,

Nothing illegal, even have a receipt for it from "Recycled Technologies" in London. She gave me the sticker to put on the computer.
Thanks -- I'll go to the software forum.
