    So I was looking for a site to watch a tv show of mine and some of them wanted me to download applications so that I could view it. One was PlayitAll and I believe the other was Xvid or maybe DivX. I then decided i didn't want either so I uninstalled. I can't say exactly what I was doing at the time but suddenly all my shortcuts icons and exe icons everywhere (desktop, start menu, in folders, quick launch everywhere) turned to the unassociated icon. I was able through shear luck to get an EXE File Association Fix imported to my Reg. From there I just started scanning and found nothing. SOOOO this may not be a virus but then again it might be I am not sure so I started here and will appreciate any direction from you guys as support here has always been wonderful.

    Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

    Uninstall the below if you did not deliberately install it yourself.

    • WinPcap 4.0.2

    Now download LSP - Fix

    Run LSP-Fix.

    Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the cewrynub.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

    Then, Select the >> button to move cewrynub.dll into the Remove section.

    Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.
    If it is already in the Remove section, just click Finish.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DRM
    c:\program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
    C:\WINDOWS\{52CD4715-C7FD-4197-9423-88C14C834450}
    C:\WINDOWS\{7F7635FC-B887-49FA-8526-094724C01A6E}
    File::
    c:\program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DRM\83b62a06.dll
    c:\windows\system32\cewrynub.dll

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Ok WinPcap has been removed.

    Ran LSP and removed the dll.

    Ran ComboFix after I did the Script part. Logs attached. When Combo was done running I had a couple of errors that I am getting on boot pop up. Basically about Itune being unable to load (one of the programs that apple insists needs to run in the background) properly as well as an error with my catalyst/control panel for my graphics card. I am assuming these problems are occurring because i lost all the associations for the file extensions on my pc. So its not running differently just letting you know the errors popped up when the scan was running/done (i actually stepped away from my pc so not sure when the windows popped up).

    Ok so now for my fudge up. Instead of running GetLogs.bat in the MGtools folder, I clicked on the C:\MGtools.exe soooo I have no idea if "reinstalling" MG will cause a problem with the log file BUT once it was done doing its thing I went to the folder and ran the GetLogs.bat... Log is attached.

    Sorry about the mess up >.< let me know if there is anything i need to redo because of it.

    Try this in both safe mode and normal mode:

    Run the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat by double clicking on it.

    Has this done anything to help your file association problem>?

    Ok ran it first in normal then in safe mode. Not sure what it did the cmd prompt window went by really quickly lol

    It does not seem to have helped my association problem. Things like the book marks in IE are still showing the no association icon though they do function. The one noticeable one that does not function is the "show desktop" in the quick launch, which is a scf file.

    Another random thing that is showing now is in the Windows Security Center it is showing that i don't have virus protection turned on. When I check Symantec it shows all its processes on and running.

    Is this viral? or do you think i just stepped in something and am about to face the UGH must back up and do a whip of my HD scenario? LOL I must say I have helped a lot of people with virus problems but even this has me stumped one minute all is well the next min poof....

    I did find this helpful site its where i got the exe association fix but man do I not want to go through and do all of these fixes, that and I want to know what caused the issue in the first place, hate putting band-aids on things !>.<! but i thought i would share: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

    So from this:

    To this?
    As long as only the above is wrong, and not what you originally told me, then I think you would be better off posting for advice in the software forum. :)

    Yes, Doug Knox scripts, familiar with those. I just thought we would use a method already installed into MGTools.

    To be honest I believe the only file associations that are working are the exe ones which i got the fix for from his site. I would have to browse around on my c drive looking for other file extensions that wouldn't commonly be found on my desktop.

    The error messages are still appearing at start up and are as follows:

    The two errors:
    Error 1:
    "Could not load file or assembly 'MOM.Implementation' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

    Error 2:
    "Apple Application Support was not found.

    Apple Application Support is required to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall itunes, then install iTunes again.

    Error 2"

    (there are actually two windows with the same iTunesHelper error that pop up but both have identical messages)

    As far as my logs go does it look like it was not a virus? I admit to being on some questionable sites trying to watch my show Merlin (yeah yeah lol cheesy but i love it!) which is why i started in the malware department. If you think I am clean then yeah lol i will go knock on the software department and ask them if they have any clue what caused/and how to fix it >.<

    Ok I am guessing that I just need to head to the software thread. Can anyone confirm that my logs are clean of viruses?

    You shouldn't bump, as it will only delay my response to you. :(

    Your logs look clean to me, I removed what I did not like, c:\windows\system32\cewrynub.dll was the problem. Any outstanding issues you have do not sound malware related to me, so yes, go ahead and post in the software forum. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
