:cry I can fix the renaming, but I can't figure out how to fix the sizes. Every single program is suddenly 5KB and cannot be executed. Thanks.

P.S. No idea what the virus was other than it added a .vbs extention to all the files.

First....have you tried a system restore to a point before this began?

Second...if you can not do a restore, then go Dougknox and download the ninth item to fix exe file associations.

Let me know how that works....then:
Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Thanks. That 9th item did fix the sizes, but the programs try to run in what looks like a dos window. I have no malware on my computer. It's totally clean! I'll work those steps so I can give you a report. Dropped my $2,000 Dell laptop this morning and shattered the LCD monitor. So a little distracted.

If you have no malware on your system, then I would suggest that you post in the software section for further assistance. :)

Okay. But I have none because I got rid of the sucker that changed all my files. :)

If you are certain you removed all traces...if not, do the Read and Run instructions.

By the way, that registry thing did fix the sizes, but corrupted the applications that were working. So that just made the problem worse. Need to contact that guy about his "fixes".

you used the fix for exe files? and what happened exactly....do you have your xp cd?

I had already reinstalled the xp os and it had no effect on the file sizes. That registry fix from that website you gave me did the trick, but now even the setup programs that didn't need resizing won't run now (not the installed ones, but the setup files). I get a brief flash of a dos command window when I doubleclick them and poof.

I'll have to consider my years of downloads a total loss. Probably good riddance :wave At least my OS partitiion is okay. I use Acronis to backup my stuff, not system restore, but apparently my laptop can't handle the restore process for the Active Partition (stupid dell) , hence the reason I did a total reinstall.

Those dang viruses! I'm just going to keep trying for fun, but I don't expect to fix the problem.

    thanks for trying to help.

Sorry to hear that...perhaps you should post in the software section.

    Good luck. :)
