Vista disabled security keeping from reboot

Hi all.

A friend is at a conference for work, and his laptop was giving him trouble. He was using Camtasia to process some videos, and during the encoding or something, a file was blamed for the trouble, and the computer would shut down.

He researched the file, and found out how to disable it via the command prompt. He doesn't remember the exact name of the file...just that it started with a D, and was maybe 3 letters long (at least the file portion...not necessarily the file type).

He disabled it, and now the computer will not boot up. Not into any of the safe modes. Not with LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION. He is stuck. Is there a restore option that he can run without his install CD...maybe even if he could do safe mode with command prompt.

Any ideas?

Hello,
Depending on whether the system is 32bit or 64bit download one of these iso files. Burn the iso image with a program like Nero or Imgburn. You cannot just copy the iso file to a CD or it will not boot. Boot the CD and then select System Restore. If there are any restore points, you should be able to restore the system to an earlier date.

Edit: It would really help if he could remember the file and command he used.

And since it is a laptop does he have the option of Repair you Computer at the top of the list of SafeMode/Advanced options? That would take him to the screen with System Restore option as well without the CD. [Note not system recovery but system restore is what he is looking for]
