Okay I cant seem to find anything on this, but please point me to a thread if you know of one that answers this.

I have recently switched to Vista, why oh why, I dont know. Among my many problems with the operating system is that whenever I renumber image files, Vista messes up the order. This is the specific problem.

I take pictures on my phone/camera, send them over blutooth to the laptop, a compaq presario CQ40, and then I want to date the pictures, in order. I select all the images and add a date say 050509 for today. Now I expect 2 things to happen. Firstly all the pics to be numbered in order, i.e. 050509 the 050509 (1), 050509 (2) etc. This does not happen it starts numbering on 050509 then goes 050509 (2) on. That is okay. However, it also numbers the images randomly, so if I select the first pic to number from, the last one is numbered as the first. this is soo stupid that I cannot believe even MS would do this, have I missed something, how can I can number pics in the order taken in vista folders?

What may work is adding the "date modified" column if it isn't already there.
Sort files by date modified by clicking on that column header.
    Select all the pics.
Right-click the top one and chose rename.
    Rename and then hit enter.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yeah i tried all of these, and the same problem. It just wants to renumber the last pic as first if you renumber from the first, regardless of how it is ordered. I cant believe everyone is really furious about this issue, and it makes me think the problem lies with me, but I get the same issue on multiple vista systems.

Tried under a different folder view? (list or detail)
Also you are renaming using the first file in the list (not the middle or last)?

    EDIT:
Ok, after a lot of tries I can replicate.

What I did to replicate was:
single click to select the last file
    ctrl-a to select all
    right-click on file>rename

If no file is selected and then I do a ctrl-a to select all files and then rename it works ok.

Yes that seems to do it, thanks. Still cant see why Vista has changed the numbering protocols. Seems a bit silly. Hurry up Windows 7.

darn it I had forgotten my major gripe with this system.

It is re. re-numbering. Okay so I have 1-100 pics. I renumber 1-100 expecting 1, 1(1), 1(2) and so forth. It numbers 1, 1(2). Okay so I renumber the 1(2) to 100. Then it completely mucks up, and renumbers out of order for no reason. Just so stupid. Dont know why it does this.

Lol, unfortunately it sounds like you may be better off with a seperate renaming program.
    Something like Renamemaster.

It has a variable where you can simply add incremental numbering to the end of your filenames. Very flexible.

That looks really good. I will go away and have a look at it. Good call, thanks.
