Vista shutdown error during startup

    I have a compaq laptop with Vista Home Basic on it. During startup I will recieve the windows did not shut down successfully and have the option to start in safe mode, last good config, or start normally. The computer was shut down properly and it will still say it wasn't. It only does it one out of three startups. Any ideas what could be causing this isuue?
