My cousin just got deployed and was gracious enough to let me use his PC. What he didnt tell me was that it was pretty hosed. I find that I can boot in Safe Mode, no go on Normal mode tho.

I did what I could in the Read Me Run Me. Problems I had were as follows:

Super spyware remover would not install in safe mode
I got a error catchme failed to initialize when Malwarebytes tried to reboot.
RootRepeal keeps dissapearing after scan. Cant get a log for it.

Mind you I am probably just doing something wrong. If i need to delete anything let me know. Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Please only attach the logs we request. The only log from MGtools that you should be attaching is MGlogs.zip.

You only have a little bit more to clean up.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Re: Vista wont boot in Normal mode/ The Big Fix

Thanks for the welcome. I've come to this site before, but not as a registered user. Glad to be here.:-D

The night I originally posted I did all my work in safe mode. Sun Java would not run the installer in safe mode. After following the "Read me Run me" I was able to boot into normal mode-big thanks again- and with that said I uninstalled and reinstalled the same night. I hope that didnt mess with anything. Also, I found that I couldnt run ComboFix.exe in normal mode. I am guessing thats because it was originally pathed in safe mode. Not being sure why it was failing to run I just did all the new work in safe mode, mimicking the original troubleshooting environment. I also ran the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file without right-clicking-run-as-administrator. I apologize if this marred the fix in anyway.

I would like to thank you guys greatly for being the shield against this constant onslaught of electronic terror. I have friends that have the knowledge and programming capability to do what you do to help, but they would just rather buy a mac... Thanks for being here for us.:clap

    You're welcome.

You need to attach a log from MGtools that is run in normal boot mode. Remember to right click C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and run as administrator.

What exactly do you have installed from Comodo?

  6. Hendoggy

I have the entire Comodo antivirus and firewall installed.

Okay but you did not have this installed when you first came here and you were not supposed to be doing anything we do not request. You now have both AVG and Comodo trying to run since you never properly uninstalled AVG. Now you will have to clean this up.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgssie.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG9_TRAY] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG9\avgtray.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\Windows\System32\avgrsstx.dll C:\Windows\System32\guard32.dll
    O23 - Service: AVG WatchDog (avg9wd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgwdsvc.exe
    O23 - Service: AVG Firewall (avgfws9) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgfws9.exe
    O23 - Service: AVG9IDSAgent (AVGIDSAgent) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Identity Protection\Agent\Bin\AVGIDSAgent.exe

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:

    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Having problems running combofix in normal mode still. I am getting permissions error. Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. I am in admin login and I am running program as administrator. I re-downloaded the file too. I rAN MG Tools as you instructed and fix those files, but since I dont have all the logs you requested I will wait to get combofix to work.

    Use the below process instead!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Did you have a problem applying the fixme.reg patch? It does not looked like it worked or you forgot it and since I do not see it on your Desktop, I have to assume you did not do this step. Without doing this, Comodo will be broken.

You also did not tell me how things are working.

Yes i did. Should I do it again?

Well it did not work no matter what it said. We will have to try using ComboFix in safe boot mode. Delete any copies of ComboFix that you have and then download and save the current version to your Desktop.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!

Only ComboFix needed to be run in safe boot mode. We need a log from MGtools from Normal Boot mode to see if the fix actually worked. Sorry if that was not clear.

Looks like ComboFIx could not restore the registry entry for Comodo. Perhaps Comodo is even getting in the way of the restore. You will have to reinstall Comodo.

You also need to delete the below and put ComboFix on your Desktop as requested or our final instructions below will not work properly:

    c:\freshstartprograms\DownloadedPrograms\ComboFix.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
