Finally figured out how to post my problem.

I have Windows 7 64 bit. 9 gigs ram, 1 gig on my nvidia graphics card, two hard drives.

    Here's my problem:

First though, you probably might ask me what were you doing right before it happened. I got a power hit and my UPS didn't make the computer stay on.

Thereafter I have this problem (seems all my programs are working though):

I get this Window only after I boot up. Visual C++ terminated in an unusual wayThe title bar says Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusaul way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

It's driving me crazy that I have to say OK to work with my PC. After I
close this window, everything works just fine. So I just want to stop this error window on booting up.

    Hope you can help

    Try this
Run the System File Checker (SFC) from an elevated Command Prompt, i.e. click the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter.

Performed the System File Checker (SFC) exactly as instructed. Reply was:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

(FYI -- In safe mode the window message error does not appear. I expected that would be the case. So something is causing this on startup.)

SFC did not find any integrity violations.

Wonder if doing a checkdsk would lock out any bad file??

It would seem like the Visual C+++ program is made of glass, because it's so easily damaged.

There is a problem installing the AVG 9.0 FREE anti Virus program related to a damaged visual C+++.

The fix is to remove the Visual C+++ 2005 program in Add/remove programs and then reinstall it from a downloaded install file.

I've had to do that on two different PC's lately, both running Windows Vista Home Premium.

I wrote up a How-to on this fix (from info I found on the internet) and will gladly PM it to anyone needing it.

    The Shadow:

    I have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923 x86
    and
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable

Do I just uninstall the Redistributable and then reinstall it or
    uninstall both??

The instructions I have say "Delete Both".

For reinstalling Visual C+++ 2005 in XP, you'll need the .exe file
    (vcredist_x86.exe)
and in Vista you'll need the .msi file.
    (vcredist.msi)
I was hung up on that for a while, till I finally figured it out.
Both files are pretty easy to find and download using Google.

    Good Luck,

    The Shadow:

I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have downloaded the redistributable x86 2005 but it is an exe. I'll look for the .msi for the redistributable.

As for the update, I think Microsoft will give me a windows update on it but I'll look for it to download too. Should the update one also be .msi.

I'll start looking and delete my download of the .exe for the redistributable.

    Thanks for the clarification.

The X86 tells you that the program is for 32 bit systems ONLY. Eh?
I had tried to use the 32 bit program on Vista Home 32 bit, but I kept getting an error message that the .msi file could not be found. Of course NOT, because I was running the WRONG program!

The original info I found on the net, never mentioned the .msi file so I kept running the .exe file and kept getting the same error message that the .msi file could not be found.
It is also suggested to RE-Boot the PC between removing the old program and installing the new program.

Once I downloaded and ran the .msi file, mentioned above, everything worked OK and I was finally able to install AVG.

    The Shadow:

    Continuing the saga:

Unistalled the 2005 redist. Rebooted. Tried to install the .msi one
    and got

Error 1311 source file not found vrdist1.cab.

So the cabinet file is missing. I'm thinking MS will send me a windows
update and I probably will be right back where I started.

Don't have this problem anymore. It's been a long time so I don't remember what I did.

Probably some advice from Major Geeks.

    All is well.
