Im using vlc player on my old windows vista laptop. However its struggles to play MKV files. The playback stutters, pixelates and freezes. I hasve been on the vlc site and looked at the trouble shooting page but nothing I have tried has worked. I have not long restored my laptop to factory setting, but the vlc player used to work flawlessly before then. I have reinstalled all the correct drivers so cant think whats causing the issue. Any help wiuth this will be very much appreciated, thanks in advance guys. Any better players than vlc????

Most likely the laptop is not able to handle the requirements of the newer version of VLC. It helps to know the specs and other programs that are running while you are trying to use VLC.

Download Speccy from the downloads section on here, and post the URL it gives you after running.

Not the requirements of the new vlc, they are very low. I use vlc on a very old PC, so I know this for a fact. The more likely culprit here is the video quality, in that, higher video quality requires higher processing power. That means CPU power, GPU power and RAM.

You have to look, not just at HD (720p or 1080p), but more important are bit rates and frame rates. Higher bit rates and higher frame rates mean higher demand on power.

VLC may still work flawlessly now as before if you play the same videos or rather same quality as you were playing years ago.

hhmmm must be my laptop. Ive tried the same MKV files on my pc and thye play flawlessly with vlc player. Going to try and convert the video files to another format, probably mpeg2 and see if that helps

    It could be a codec.
And you might try different players.
I use my old laptop for all our movies and VLC is a huge problem for it. Rather than try to figure out why the laptop was not happy with VLC, I uninstalled VLC and downloaded K-lite Mega Codec Pack from MG. All my problems went away and I actually like the FFDShow interface better.
For another test you can try Windows Media player.
This should be much faster and easier than converting HD movies.

I tried the k-lite mega package as well and I have to say, it runs HD better than vlc.

Glad you got it sorted out.
In this case the fix is easier than understanding the problem. It's about the codecs they use.
Sorry if I implied Media Player would let you change video formats. I meant to suggest it as another player.
