Trying to copy/burn a CD using (Matshita?) CD/DVD drive in Dell laptop with W7, and after go thru the 'onboard' prompts W7 process, CD/DVD drive disappears from Explorer and from the TaskBar Notiftn Area.
Need to restart PC to get it back.

    Using burn disk directions from...
    http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/12/how-to-copy-dvd-another-dvd-using-single-dvd-drive/
    http://superuser.com/questions/262528/how-can-i-copy-a-dvd-to-another-dvd-using-a-single-dvd-drive

The process involves moving CD files to a desktop folder and then 'burning from there.
Not sure if that process actually duplicates such as a program disk functionality, ie for a CD/DVD program backup purpose.

In the past, with XP, used Roxio (free), but thats not available that could find.

Thoughts (on either/both questions, ie W7 'burn' CD/DVD drive dissappears and free replacement for/like 'Roxio') ?

    Ps:
Also tried the CD/DVD drive fix steps at...
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060 (btw, couldnt find either needed? 'UpperFilters' or 'LowerFilters' at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} )
...without much luck (ie still have the drive disappears problem).

Just one thing to look at. Make sure all the files are in the folder, especially if you are burning to create a bootable medium. Your security programs could have quarantined one of the files, depending on what you are burning, but, also, some of the a-v/firewall + a-vs are high with false positives.

Don't know how this could cause your issue, but I suppose it's possible with some security programs...

Best method is to create an ISO of the disc and burn it to a new disc. CDBurnerXP can do both operations (and runs in W7)

I just had a magic disappearing DVD drive in a Dell laptop and a firmware update downloaded from Dell fixed it; but, it gave me a minor fit as it only appeared in the PC when there was a disc in the drive.
What is the model of the Dell and/or the DVD drive?

    Thanks all for the help.

Went with a freeware program instead of trying to workaround with W7.

Tried ImgBurn but it seemed more for creating medial disks, etc.

Tried CDBurnXP and after some menu learning/experimentation, it seemed to be the best for 'Copy or grab disk'... ie backup a program install disk etc.

Ps: Also ImgBurn wanted to add 'PUP.Optional.OpenCandy' per Mbam... I 'Quarantined' it.
