How do I install a new chip on my motherboard. I want to replace my P4 2.6 with a faster P4. Can I just put the chip in and lock it in or is it more complicated?

BTW, what is the fastest P4 available?

Most, it is remove the fan/heatsink module, flip the lever securing the chip, and then pop out the old one, insert the new. Big question is, can your motherboard support a faster chip? A 2.6ghz should be sufficient, unless you are gaming.

I am doing Folding@Home and a faster chip would get more work done. The only chips I could find were 3.2 Ghz. How can I tell what chips my board will accomodate? I think the current chip is an Intel Northwood.

Check the manufacturer website. Is this machine a OEM machine, or a PC that you built yourself? If self-built, check the motherboard manufacturer website for what chipsets it will take.
