Hi, it seems i am infected with something that opens internet explorer popups in the background without me being able to see them. The process is called iexplore.exe i think. It also muted the wave audio on the volume controls.
I saw another thread with this problem and followed it. I have already scanned with superanti spyware and malwarebytes.
The thread i read told me to download bootkit remover so i did and this is what came up
    Bootkit Remover
    (c) 2009 eSage Lab
    www.esagelab.com

    Program version: 1.1.0.0
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

    System volume is \\.\C:
    \\.\C: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0 at offset 0x00000000`00007e00
    Boot sector MD5 is: 053cceb28da3cbbc8bf81f9870cc697a

    Size Device Name MBR Status
    --------------------------------------------
37 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Unknown boot code

Unknown boot code has been found on some of your physical disks.
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector:
    remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
    remover.exe fix <device_name>

    Done;
    Press any key to quit...

I then made a command in notepad and saved it as a .bat file, ran it and it seems to have fixed the physicaldrive0.
I thought it had fixed the problem, but it seems its still there. The wave audio no longer mutes, and i cant see the iexplore.exe process anymore, but i still hear clicking as if i am browsing internet pages and i occasionaly hear the ad saying "prime screatch cards" but i still see no internet explorer window. I then ran a full scan with malware bytes (second scan) and nothing came up.
How do i get rid of this?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now run MGtools per the below instructions and attach the requested MGlogs.zip file

    Also address the below questions/warnings!

WARNING: Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing on to the next steps I will be posting after I see the above log since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections can react badly and that could result in a PC not being bootable. You really don't have much choice though since these infections are too dangerous to your security to leave on a PC.

Also note if you have a Dell PC which uses a non-standard MBR ( or another manufacturer's who does similar to Dell) , fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not continue but you risk serious problems leaving this infection in place and thus your only other option would be to try using the Dell Restore Utility to return a factory ship state which will remove everything you additional you have put onto the PC.

Okay to pass the time while i was waiting for a reply i did another AVG scan.
An alert came up saying Multiple threat detection. The two infections are called exploit phoenix exploit kit (type 1112). Im guessing the other malware is trying to get me infected with this as it sais the process name is iexplore.exe

You MBR infection has been removed but we have a couple of things to do.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {28BC2EC4-5EAD-45E1-9F9F-82CD5E293601} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You really need to stop using MSconfig to control startups. See step 4 of the below:
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

And if you are going to say your PC is slow, it is because you have an old slow PC with not enough memory and your free hard disk space is very low too. The below is seen in your logs:
    Code:
    Processor x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 10 GenuineIntel ~[B][COLOR=red]996 Mhz[/COLOR][/B]
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory [B][COLOR=red]43.40 MB[/COLOR][/B]

    Drive C:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 37.26 GB (40,007,729,152 bytes)
    Free Space 3.68 GB ([COLOR=red][B]3,947,327,488 bytes[/B][/COLOR])

Re: Wave audio mutes, Invisible IE pop-ups (iexplore.exe), bootkited still there help

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
