Wave Volume Mutes itself, IE popus

The original symptoms I had this morning seem to have changed after the process outlined in the "Read Me" thread, so I'll list a quick before and after. The volume control on my keyboard stopped working quite a while ago, but within the past week the wave volume constantly resets to zero. At about that time, I started getting random IE windows opening with ads no matter what I was doing at the time.

After the steps I did today, since the final restart of my system (20 mins ago) I have not had a IE window open, but that was intermittent before. None of the shortcut keys on my keyboard work now, and the wave volume still resets (although after the Malwarebytes scan the volume control worked up until the restart).

If it's of any help, pressing the volume control button on my keyboard would quickly open "WBT-MMkey" on the taskbar then disappear before opening the volume control window. It only did that when opening from the keyboard.

Thank you very much for any help and here are my logs.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.
Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections can react badly and that could result in a PC not being bootable. You really don't have much choice though since these infections are too dangerous to your security to leave on a PC.

Also note if you have a Dell PC which uses a non-standard MBR ( or another manufacturer's who does similar to Dell) , fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not continue but you risk serious problems leaving this infection in place and thus your only other option would be to try using the Dell Restore Utility to return a factory ship state which will remove everything you additional you have put onto the PC.

Thanks for the fast reply. Attached is the log. Just received another popup so that's not fixed. I will backup everything now, but I just realized I left something out of my post. When trying to enable system restore again I get the following error message:
Could not start the System Restore Service on Local Computer

Error 1359: An internal error code

We did not try to fix it yet. I just had you run another scan and asked you some questions that I need answers to before we can continue.

I'm aware of that. I meant that I had thought that the popups were solved by the programs I ran earlier, but it turns out the problem remains.

Thanks again and looking forward to your help. I'm in the process of backing up my files now.

Okay! Once you have things backed up, your fix is below. But do note as stated earlier that this may impact any Dell Recovery Partition.

Now if you wish to continue and fix the malware - please do the following:
    • Run MBRCheck.exe
    • Wait until you see the following lines:
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
      • Options:
[1] Dump the MBR of a physical disk to file.
[2] Restore the MBR of a physical disk with a standard boot code.
        [3] Exit.
        Enter your choice:
    • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
    • When the program asks you to Enter your choice: enter 2 to Restore the MBR and press the Enter key
    • Now the program will ask you to "Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel):"
      • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
    • The program will show Available MBR codes as below
    • You need to select your version of Windows frrom the list. For example, enter 0 or 1 for XP and then press Enter.
    • The program will prompt for confirmation. Type 'YES' and hit Enter.
    • Left click on the title bar (where program name and path is written). From menu chose Edit -> Select All
    • You will see all the text in the window get highlighted.
    • Hit the Enter key on your keyboard to copy all of the text into the clipboard.
    • Paste that text into Notepad, save it to your desktop as MBRfix.txt
    • Restart your PC.
    • Attach the MBRfix.txt file to your next message..
Now tell me how things are working.

Thanks for the help. I'll take my chances with the Dell Recovery. In a few minutes the backup will be done and I'll post again when finished with your directions.

    Thanks again for the help.

Okay, the .txt document is attached. I just restarted so I don't know about the popups but the keyboard hotkeys still don't work and the wave volume was back at zero on reboot.

Let's see if the MBR was fixed.

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Went better this time. Also, since running your last step I have not seen an IE popup, although I haven't been logged on too long. As I said before it's intermittent so who knows if that part is gone.

It's gone. Your MBR has been fixed.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. Reenable System Restore if you still have it disabled
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for helping me get rid of that. There are still two more problems. The first is my keyboard hotkeys no longer work since doing the steps in the "Read Me" section and the second id that I can't enable System Restore after I stopped it (as posted earlier). Is it possible that whatever program found the problem also deleted something the keyboard needed to run (specifically Malwarebytes)?

Any help with these issues would be appreciated.

SUPERAntiSpyware only remove Flash Player cookies.

Malwarebytes removed a few misc trojans

    Combofix mistakenly removed the below:

    c:\windows\system32\PCLECoInst.dll

This file appears to be something for Pinnacle Systems CoInstaller a 700-USB device. Does this have anything to do with your keyboard.

Not according to your logs. Nothing related to System Restore or you keyboard was remove unless the Pinnacle dll file is related to your keyboard.

  15. djt283

    djt283 Private E-2

My keyboard is still the original from Dell so that Pinnacle file shouldn't have anything to do with it. I suggested Malwarebytes because after I rebooted following that scan is when the problem started.

The problem of not being able to enable System Restore still exists as well. What can I do to help you diagnose that?

Okay then let's see if it is related to C:\WINDOWS\msacm32.drv

Run Malwarebytes and select the Quarantine tab. Locate the above file and select it. Then click Restore. Then reboot and see if there is any change.

You may have to work this in the Software Forum but let's try a couple things first.

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System File Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Now got to the C:\windows\inf folder and locate the sr.inf file. Right click on it and select install. Reboot. Any change.

That wasn't it. After restoring the file the problem persists and now the volume settings tray icon is gone.

I also can't run the scan since in their infinite wisdom, Dell did not provide me with any recovery or operating system cd. That's probably the lesser of the two though since I'd imagine there's a way to get that working.

Okay then either manually delete that file yourself or run a full scan with MBAM and let it delete it again since based on everything I know, it is part of the infections you had. You can read about it and the other files MBAM removed here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=TrojanDownloader%3AWin32%2FSilentbanker.A

The you will need to get a CD from them or check for a factory recovery partition (if still working) and restore to factory ship date. Nothing in any of your logs indicates any reason for the problems you are currently having. Everything that was removed/fixed needed to be fixed other than perhaps the Pinnacle file I already mentioned which you can copy back from the C:\QooBox backup folder of ComboFix. You would just copy the below file:

    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\PCLECoInst.dll.vir

back to the C:\Windows\system32 folder and rename it to be: PCLECoInst.dll

Thus it may just be that the malware has itself damaged other aspects of your Windows installation. Without a CD containing your operating system files and also other CD needed for any drivers required for your hardware, there is not much you can do.

[EDIT] Just wondering something else seen in the ComboFix backups. Let's see if the below registry entries were actually modified and what they are really for. [/EDIT]

Put the below files into a ZIP file and attach it here and I will make a registry patch to restore these if they have been removed.
    Code:
    "C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\Registry_backups\"
    Jul 19 2010 1722 "AddRemove-9722CA1E8F72F362E93CBEC75A707FDABFC8D880.reg.dat"
    Jul 19 2010 169 "HKLM-Run-USB2Check.reg.dat"
    Jul 19 2010 163 "HKCU-Run-DW6.reg.dat"
    Jul 19 2010 145 "HKLM-Run-PinnacleDriverCheck.reg.dat"
