Hi,

Since around 2 days ago, I have been having invisible pop-ups, constant clicking noises and the wave volume is turned down.

I have followed the cleaning procedure, and I've attached my logs.

If it helps, the problem is on a Sony Vaio VGN-A317S Laptop.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your infection is in your Master Boot Record (MBR). We need to see the below log before creating a fix.
• Download bootkit_remover.rar
• Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
• You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
• After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
• Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe
NOTE: The Command Prompt window text can be copied to the clip board by right clicking on the top bar of the window and using the Edit commands to Mark, Copy, and Paste.

Also I need to ask some questions:
1. Do you have any drives that has a non-windows installation on them
2. Are all drives NTFS formatted
3. Do you have any non-standard or special MBRs which can occur from companies like Dell or HP who frequently install additional partitions used for recovery partitions in lieu of giving CD/DVDs.
4. Is any program like Grub ( see:http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ ) being used
5. Is drive-encryption being used?
6. Are any drives external USB pen drives or external hard drives being used?
7. VERY IMPORTANT: Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections can react badly and that could result in a PC not being bootable. You really don't have much choice though since these infections are too dangerous to your security to leave on a PC.

1. Not that I am aware of.
2. I'm not sure; it is one hard drive that is partitioned into 2
3. Possibly, I think there is a Sony VAIO recovery partition.
4. No.
5. Not sure.
6. I use an external hard drive to backup documents occasionally, but it is disconnected most of the time.
7.Yes, however could the virus/malware have been copied to the external hard drive?

Thanks.

Yes your logs show the below three partitions
I'm not sure what effect repairing the MBR by putting in a standard Windows MBR will have on your PC. You may want to ask Sony first. See if they allow you to run Windows own fixmbr command or if they say it will cause a problem with their recovery partition.

If it will cause a problem, you will likely have to restore to factory ship state to fix the problem. That is unless you don't ever plan to use their Recovery Partition and have your own CDs for a reinstall in which case you can just fix the MBR and see what happens ( but still be sure you have what you need backed up first).

Ok, I rang Sony, they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't damage the partition.

I have created a recovery CD, however will this have the virus on?

Also, I have backed up my photos and music, but again will this have copied the virus to the external hard drive?

As all my documents are saved to the D drive, and all programs to the C drive, could I not just clean the C drive? Or is the virus on the D drive...

Would the fixmbr command wipe the D drive? I don't really care about the programs, I can reinstall them.

Sorry for all the questions
Thanks again.

I cannot be positive but I expect it would be okay.

This is possible. We will scan it.

Your C and D partitions are part of the same physical drive on which you have the infection that needs to be fixed. You need to backup everything you need from the D drive onto your external drive. The point is that in the unlikely chance that something goes wrong with the fix, you will not be able to boot the PC which means you will not have easy access to either the C or D partitions unless you use special boot CDs or physically remove the hard disk from your laptop and use a spcecial device to access it from another PC.

Fixing the MBR will not erase anything on the hard disk from either the C or D partitions. It could just make it unbootable as stated above, but odds are that it will most likely just remove the malware.

Now if you have important data backup up and have understood previous warnings and are now ready to try and fix the problen - please do the following:
• Click Start, Run then copy and paste the below into the Run box and click OK.
"%userprofile%\Desktop\remover.exe" fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
• Now reboot your PC and after reboot continue with the below instructions.
• Disable System Restore on all drives.
• Look for the below folder and if if it sill exists, delete it.
• C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft
• If you don't see this Microsoft folder or are denied access to the System Volume Information folder, just continue on
• Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs:
• C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Now let's also recheck all partitions including your external device but we will use a different program this time. So insert you external hard disk now so it is available for the next scan.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
• Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
• It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
• Done! Press ENTER to exit...
• Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
• Found non-standard or infected MBR.
• Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
• Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
• MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
• Attach this log to your next message.

Okay your MBR infection appears to have been fixed. Unless you are still having problem, I would ignore the error about a raw format on the external drive.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 18

Now we need to use ComboFix
• Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
• If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
• Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
• If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
• Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
• Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
• At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
• You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
• Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
• Follow the prompts.
• When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
• I will ask for this log below
Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs:
• C:\ComboFix.txt
• C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Okay your logs are clean. Just let us know how things look when you return. Also do the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
• Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
• "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
• Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
• This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
• Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
• Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
