    Hi all :wave

looking to buy another RTS soon, just wondering what people like

Warhammer 40,000 DOW Anthology was the last one I got
also have Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3 & Starcraft (plus expansions for all 3)

Only have dial-up, so unfortunately not getting into World of Warcraft or anything like that.

Back to playing Tiger Woods 2002 at the moment, need something with a bit more action

    Thanks

I hear good stuff about Medieval 2:Total War. The screenshots I see are fascinating and the Total War series have definitely a good record. Haven't played it myself though so can't be sure about it ;).

I just have to recommend hunting down Total Annihilation, and it's two expansions. If you've only got cash for one expansion, Core Contingency is the one to pick up. There's a number of excellent mods for it as well, so you probably won't be bored very rapidly.

Rise of Nations has always been a favorite of mine.

so will be worth looking at

I forgot to mention that I have "Age of empires II: Gold Edition" as well
I just dont like it - its a bit too busy

Also I try to get the Anthologies these days where possible, even if it means being a year or 2 behind

Get the feeling it requires cutting edge hardware, and / or suffers from a distinct loss of gameplay speed ?

Yeah, new hardware is almost a must if you really want to enjoy the beauty of the game. Game speed isn't bad, but if you are looking for an older game, then I'd suggest the Civilization series, particularly Civilization 2. I *love* those games. Although, they are turn based, and the game speed is drawn out, but you can increase it in the options if you wish.

Don't know how good War Front: Turning Point is, but it looked pretty cool. Also might try Company of Heroes.

Civ 3 has a RTS option for online play. Not w/o knowing yousystem specs it's hard to make a reccomendation. I currently play CoH (Company of Heroes) I have heard that it's dialup freindly.

Yeh i agree age of empires is good i would also suggest battlefield - it can be single player however you can play online with other real people should you upgrade to broadband

Heya, Just a suggestion. If your into RTS's then theres a pretty unknown one myself and some friends picked up not too long ago called Hearts of Iron.
A WW2 Strategy game, incredibly hard, a difficult learning curve but once hell of a well thought out RTS game, I'd reccommend that one anyday.

As for the best one in the last 2 years or so, I liked the Cossacks gamers, aswell as the Age of Empires 3 titles, but with C&C3 Coming soon I think we'll have a new winner

Ditto from me - very well executed. Another favorite "Command and Conquer - Generals". That was pretty good, but believe it or not, the expansion pack "Generals - Zero:Hour" was even better. This is the best expansion pack that I've ever seen for the sheer amount of it's additional content. In fact, had they chosen to do so, it could have been made into a stand alone game. I hope this one is still being published, 'cause it's a classic. :)

I thought that the Lord of the Rings RTSs were pretty fun. Company of heroes is awesome too but it can be tough.

codename Panzers Phase 1 is another Phase 2 is good too. Company of Heros is a very slippery slope in multy.

Go find yourself a nice copy of Homeworld, or Homeworld 2 and settle down with it. I loved that series to *death*. Seriously, I'm on my second copy... of each...
These are the games of "more than two years ago", but, they're good regardless, and not too resource taxing.

C&C3 looks like it could be a good one, Company of Heroes was an AWESOME game, though was a little umm challenging at times but hey thats part of the fun...isnt it?

you just have to be aware of how to set it up....

if you max it out it will cripple any machine... and i mean any machine...

if your smart you can play it on a medium grade machine decently you just have to be careful how you set it up....

i recommend 500 units 4 armies or less (preferably 200 keep under 1000 or in this case 800, this will keep game play smooth, note: this is for recommended system requirements)

just remember for recommended requirements 1000 units total is all thats recommended

but for fluid play 250X4armies is recommended and decrease accordingly.

supreme commander is sweet. i like it a lot. cnc3 is out but ive only played the demo. cnc first decade is a must if youre in to rts. no reason to not have the first decade...seriously
company of heroes is an awsome game too if you like wwII style

  28. hats_for_clowns

    hats_for_clowns Private E-2

I agree with King Steve, the best rts out at the moment is supreme commander, it does bring any system to its knees if you want to have a truly epic game online, but if you can stand a bit of lag its awesome!
