More security is always a good thing, other than that nothing if a browser goes the address I enter and I can go to previos pages I'm happy,I hope they put a frame step button in MP11 :)

I do like the upgrade functionality within Vista. I could buy Vista Home, then upgrade to Vista Premium, then Ultimate.

All from the same DVD. Unless I misread something..... :)

All I hope for is that Vista doesn't become XP's version of Windows ME.

    You mean forget Linux.

For the average user (and the majority), Linux just isn't user friendly enough.

Regardless of the distribution or what Linux users say, it doesn't even come close to Windows.

I couldn't finish that article. The bias is so severe, it made my head hurt. I'm a definite fan of macs, but that article sucked. I've read some other works of that guy some time back, and they were full of crap too. He's simply anti-M$, without any real information to back himself up.

Its not secret that onboard video does not have the horspepower needed for todays graphic technology. Its the same with Mac minis and OS X. They too, do not have the brawn to run all of OS X's eye candy. To build a nice machine and skimp on video...thats dumb.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

    Not really interested.

IE7 gets tabbed browsing and better security... almost as good as Firefox. Better looks... I can have a different look for each day of the week in Firefox with their themes. I think I'll stay with Firefox.

WMP 11... I don't really care as long as it logical, unobtrusive, and easy to use, and doesn't get any worse with digital rights management and wanting to phone home every single time you play anything. I think I'll keep PowerDVD for video and Musicmatch Jukebox Pro for tunes thanks.

I think Opera is far better than either Internet Explorer or FireFox.

It has a brilliant download manager, among it's many features.

    MOUMANTAI Specialist

whoa you can change the look of ie7 i didnt know that

I don't know what Linux does to certain people, but once they use it, they seem to think nothing is as good.

I'd love to see the average person try to install Linux.

Compare that to Windows, instead of ignoring all of Linux's failings and harping on about how safe it is and how little power it requires.

The average user doesn't want to learn command prompts just to install hardware and drivers.

Once Linux gets over that huge hurdle, if ever, maybe then it would have more mainstream appeal.
  16. acejones

    acejones A Different Title

yeah he's biased against ms...but thats not the part of the article i'm interested in. its the hardware requirements that ms will be forcing on people if they want to run vista. I would say i have a fairly decent home pc, but i doubt it'll be enough to run vista properly. so whats the point? i'm going to have to buy a brand new computer if i want vista. so if thats what i'm going to have to do, i'm going mac.

i'm not praising linux. maybe i'm misinformed. but i could care less about vista, ie7, or wmp10. i believe there are better alternatives out there.
  17. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

There maybe alternatives for you and for a lot of other people, but if someone wants all the HDTV features and bells and whistles, there really aren't many practical alternatives.

XP is pretty old as far as Micro$$oft operating systems are concerned.

Even games like Halo 2 for PC will need Vista, so you can bet this "trend" will be pervasive and most will have to "upgrade" sooner or later.

Anyway, as Vista hasn't been released yet, all this (especially that link) is extremely presumptuous.
  18. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

This same agrument was used when XP was released too, though. Did it change anything? No, of course not. Nobody can expect the hardware requirements to not have changed in the last 5 years. That would be ludicrous. The article that guy wrote had a 2.8ghz machine with one of the crappiest onboard video chipsets out there.

Budget machines offer budget performance. I said it before, its alot like the Mac Mini and OS X. The Mini does not support all of the eye candy of OS X. So, the argument can apply to both sides.

XP by far has been the best OS MS has released, imo. i hope the success they've had with XP continues with Vista. I know I didn't need to buy a new computer for XP, though. but i'm going to be buying something new in about 6 months anyway.
  21. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Well, IMHO, provided the scaling works fine in Vista, it should be an enjoyable experience for everyone. But, there will be a sacrifice of eyecandy. We all know how that goes though. Usually once the newness wears thin, people tweak it all to hell anyway and turn all the toys off. ;)

how long did it take you to get used to ie7 beta halo
  28. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

about 2 days.. I'm replying to you now on IE7 off my laptop and I find it no different to Opera ( my fav ) or firefox in relation to tabs etc. Once you get used to the location of the icons you'll be fine, but I love the inclusion of the page size icon for ease of making the text larger, plus the multi page layout is neat to keep track of the pages you have open in the tabs.

It has a way to go but I have found I have had no issues with it at all, security wise, using the general apps I use in Spywareblaster, MS Defender, Avast, ZoneAlarm, A2 and AdAware I have not contracted any Malware at all..

    McA... can't what?

I've seen a few posts here where people couldn't uninstall it (IE7), although I don't know the cause.

Halo, is IE7 better, same or worse? I'm using Opera which I love.

I don't really get why people get all uptight about OSes...

Linux is great - totally customisable, you can change how every single little details works if you need to. Similarly with any other piece of Open Source software. And (most of the time) security is very high.

But there are still some things that are just less hassle if you use Windows. Getting a webcam to work under Linux is a nightmare. Windows you plug it in and you're good to go.

I use whatever OS I need to get a job done. If I want to set up a nice versatile server running Debian or something like that. If I want a high speed 3D Desktop running Maya, I'll compile a custom Gentoo kernel with the bare essentials only. If I want a general graphics workstation which uses a bunch of different apps (half of which probably only work on Windows) then I'll use Windows!

All this brand loyalty stuff is silly, really....
  35. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Apples to oranges, really. Powerusers have a choice, sure. Average users do not, which in english says, Linux is not ready for primetime. I don't think brand loyalty enters that equation once.

Heck, I'll even go so far as to say that the average PC user isn't ready for OS X either, despite its pretty interface.

Its a lot like Frontpage vs. notepad. Which one is going to feed the masses?

    Some Screenshots
    and info on IE7

as to when available the IE7 team say sometime this summer.

Insom... IE7 for a honest opinion for me is better than IE6, its still quick even tho it does check a sites credentials as to being a suspect site ( Phishing filter ), icon layout would take a short while to get used to, the quick zoom function is great as is the print page options and the multitab view option is novel, they have some ways to go but at this stage its worked flawlessly on my laptop.

and I too use Opera the majority of the time Opera 9 is what I'm using at present.
  37. acejones

    acejones A Different Title

similiarly to goldy...i love linux...i love what i can provide me for free. but everytime i install it, i'm back to running windows full-time in about 2 days b/c it works, no questions asked.

IE7 will be better than IE6, the same as IE6 was better than IE5, and so on. but after its released, you'll still be back to the same issues that IE6 and IE5 are faced with...spyware and security.

i have opera installed, but i don't care for it too much. firefox forever!

if your on a page where you have to move the page over to read all of the text on it can you make the page size smaller so yu dont have to move it

and better CSS support! for those of us who have to deal with IE, you know what I'm talking about :)

FireFox will still probably be my primary browser because of its' extension library :)

True PNG support too. Although I think its already a feature in the beta. :)
  43. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Both of those things have been "in the works" since V4!! If they FINALLY actually release both of those, I'll be very happy.

Just like WinFS has been "in the works" since Win 95... and it's only JUST being introduced over 10 years later.

It's be really nice to have compliancy - surprisingly enough MS seems to be taking to the W3C standards - even if it does like to make it up as they go along from time to time. Whether compliant CSS rendering will work - and put an end to websites written for IE (which are dying off, thankfully) - is another matter entirely.
  44. Kodo

maybe IE7 will atleast render a circle where the face should be for the ACID 2 test :)

I just installed IE7 Beta2, and talk about buggy!

Couldn't import Favourites, and when it finally said OK, I only had favourites in the sidebar and not the drop down favourites menu.

Clicking on a URL in the Sidebar favourites did nothing.

Tabbed browsing also didn't work, even though it was set correctly.

I realise it's Beta, but that's pretty buggy.

It's a shame, it looks like a huge improvement over 6.

    Luckily it uninstalled OK.

Well...I just installed IE7...and I can see where I could possibly like it!?!?

The only thing that is bugging the crap out of me....How in the sam hell do you get it to where it doesn't load with all add-ons disabled??? I've read so much that I am getting cross-eyed, and when I go to "Manage Add-ons"...it shows everything as enabled...but I get that stupid annoying pop-up that tell sme that all add-ons are disabled!! I know I could turn the pop up message off, but I want to just hide the problem...I want to know how to tweak it to my likens'!!!!

Yes to all of those issues you came across Insom, Favs, Tabs and URL sidebar work fine.
