What is the difference between all these CPU Socket Types?

Can anyone explan the differences among all these socket types?
Socket A
Socket 754
Socket 940
Socket 939
Socket 478
Socket 775

Are there any other types i'm missing here?
Personally i am an AMD fan for many reasons, so i never really experimented with various CPUs.

i'm no expert in this but i'll give it a shot. The only one that I have detail on is Socket A, i think the others are later versions. The difference is in the number of pins (socket A has 462 pins and was developed for Athlon). Any new generation of processor has more pins that the last thus increasing the speed and offering different options for bus size/speed ram capicity and whatnot. Basically, the socket available on the motherboard determines what cpu you can use. I belive there are some that are versitile but most are not.

Socket 939 - Amd- Athlon 64 and 64 FX
Socket 478 - intel- don't know much about these

ZIF ( Zero Insertion Force ) is the mounting system used to hold the CPU in the socket.

 

At the moment I'm drawing a blank on the "chipsets" to go with them.
