I was wondering whats a good registry cleanup program thats safe, secure, and accurate. I want to do some small time clean up of ghost entries but I don't want to risk destroying anything...

There are a lot of good services out there, and I couldn't begin to tell you which is objectively 'best' but I happen to really like CCleaner. CCleaner has a sleak and intuitive UI, runs fast, gives you the option to backup, and has never caused me trouble on any of the PCs i've run it on (which is probably about 10).

RegSeeker is another good one that goes alot further than CCleaner, but alas is not as "Idiot" proof as CCleaner. Cautions with Regseeker to start only delete registry items marked in Green with experience you can delete others, second make sure the Backup box is checked (it should be by default) RegSeeker as well as CCleaner are available here at MG RegSeeker is at this link http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegSeeker_d2579.html
MKorostoff has given you the other. Hope that helps

In general, the more powerful a reg cleaner is, the less safe it is. I use CCleaner along with EasyCleaner, which also seems to be pretty safe - meaning it's not real thorough. But it gets a few things that CCleaner misses. It's here: http://majorgeeks.com/EasyCleaner_d414.html

But whatever you use, back up anything you delete. Any decent reg cleaner should have a backup feature - use it.

And I don't recommend using EasyCleaner's Duplicate Files scan - some of those duplicate files are necessary.

This is something i've wondered about.

What exactly are the implications of a 'non-clean' registry ?

I keep my drives tidy and defragged and running nice, and I spend a lot of time in my registry anyhow (in the software sections) so if I see a software folder that isn't needed any more I just remove it manually. (I don't reccomend this for most users though).

My point is i've never seen any side effects from not using a registry cleaner (apart from missing startup apps) so is a registry cleaner that vital ?

:) You may download Regseeker and use.
It is free and also contains many tweaks..
It scans registry and the removal links are reported in red as well as in green..
U may delete all green items safely..
Red items can be verified and deleted if u find that it pertains to a program which u already uninstalled and not in use..

U may also use Abexo free registry cleaner...

Erroneous entries in the registry add overhead to it. This is most noticable at boot-up, I think. However, most entries are really only drops in the bucket so to speak, so it will take a really messy registry for you to see much benefit from cleaning it.

I did borrow my bosses copy of Registry Mechanic (To get details to add to my program) and run it it found a lot of stuff (200ish) but to be fair I didn't notice any difference after running it.

WHen it comes to reccomending a program i'd probably have to say CCleaner too.

A very simple Registry backup program is

    Registry backup.
You might take a peak at ERUNT http://majorgeeks.com/Erunt_d1267.html
Basically it can be set to run a backup everytime you boot -- pretty handy.
Or forget that, and just run when you want to.
