title says it all i had a major fragmenting issue with my paging file and had to fix it with a page defrag from main site so i was wondering what is it for and what would happen if it was deleted at shutdown

The page file is a file Microsoft Windows uses as virtual RAM that is based on your hard drive. This is slower than RAM so it is only used to store used data and data that cannot fit into the RAM. Thus it is a critical Operating System file, but Windows would make a new one every time it starts up. However, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DELETE IT YOURSELF.

You may damage the operating system a lot by fiddling with this.
