Whats worng with my Internet Explorer?

Everytime i open Internet Explorer i receive a message saying 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' and I've tried opening several other webpages with it but i keep receiving this messages. My modem seems to be working because i'm using Mozilla Firefox and it opens all the webpages i've tried with Internet Explorer and its working perfectly.
Another problem i think thats connected to this is that i can't sign into my 'Windows Live Messenger'. I keep receiving a message with these codes.

Error Code : 80048820
Extended Error Code : 8004840f

I'll accept any help i can get.
