Can't figure out if I have the right jumper settings on these two drives.

    They are both by Hitachi.
The one that came with the computer is a T7K250.
The one I just installed is a P7K500.

There are No Markings on the drive to indicate which pins are what. :confused

I found Hitachi's technical document .pdf's for Installation Guide and I have attached
a snippet which shows how the Master and Slave drives should be configured.

The strange thing is that the jumpers As Set by emachines for the original installed drive,
did not match Either of the specified patterns.
Emachines set it up as A-B and E-F with just the one drive.

Hitachi's doc says the Master should be A-B and G-H and
the Slave should be A-B and C-D.
That's how I connected them and they are both working OK.

But WHY did emachines set the original drive as A-B and E-F.

I haven't gotten any STOP errors and no warnings or anything about a hardware problem.
Both drives look OK in the CMOS.

Just want to make sure I did it Right. ;)

    Hello,
Looking at the PDF for that drive, A-B and E-f means that it is "Cable Select". This is when the computer can automatically detect whether it is a master or slave depending on where on the cable it is attached.

    Hi tgell.

    Thanks. :cool
    I already figured that out.
They did the same thing with the optical drive.
In both cases, the drives were connected to the Master connector, but the
jumpers were set to Cable Select.

    Not a good idea, IMO.

I moved them to Master and Slave appropriately.

What is the source of that quote?

    It's from Seagate's site.

I do agree that it is best to set them manually.

My very limited experience is that with more than one drive on a cable,
Cable Select settings are not too reliable. :wave

    Thanks for the link!
