I just bought a new pc and hooked it up through an LAN connection, but for some reason when I bring up the network connections it shows 3 connections.
Internet gateway+LAN+some 1394 connection/net adapter.Do I really need all these connections active just to use the internet? Also can anyone give me any Ideas on how to make my network more secure?

All three aren't involved in your internet connection, but note:

"Windows XP users might notice a new network device labeled 1394 Connection on their system. This network device is actually your FireWire card. Although most users use FireWire to connect video and storage peripherals, Microsoft chose to list FireWire as a network device."

I'd leave what you see in there alone.

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to make my network/pc more secure?I'm using norton internet security for the moment along w/ that microsoft anti spyware+mcafee anti spyware, but I'm afraid thats not enough to keep from getting viruses and so on.my old pc had more than that on it and I still managed to get viruses etc..Do you know of any microsoft settings that could be tweaked to make it more secure?

    Your help is appreciated
