    Hiya Again~

Sorry to keep bugging ya'll but I really can't stand this anymore. I'm beginning to think that maybe I AM CURSED and am meant to NEVER have a SMOOTH running PC!!

I just BOUGHT this system and it cost me over a grand to build! WHY is it STICKING!! Like every 2 to 3 seconds it freezes up or STICKS and if I'm playing a game like MAGIC BALL then I'm screwed because I can't control anything during that 2 seconds and I DIE!! It should not be FREEZING or SKIPPING!!

    WHY WHY WHY????

ALL drivers are updated. Everything is BRAND NEW!! Please help if you can because I'm in tears. I hate absolutely HATE that I can never have a PC that works. And I waited YEARS for this one!! :(

    Here's my specs:

    Turbo X-Infinity 420W Case
    AMD™ Athlon™ XP-3200+ Processor (Barton 512K L2 Cache)

    ASUS A7N8X-E DELUXE NVIDIA nForce-2 ULTRA 400FSB SATA AGP8X W/ USB2, LAN, IEEE, & AUDIO

ok judging by the specs of your system (which is very nice btw) it's not the problem
have you done any spyware checks?
it could be your system but id check out all the software first (spyware, viruses, etc)
by the way, are you doing any overclocking AT ALL ??

  3. Omegamerc

6800LE? why must they keep on sogging good cards :( .

On the side note might be a ton of stuff...Like onboard sound card drivers / video card drivers / wxp updates missing....When you say "all drivers are updated" i hope you dont mean out of the CD's provided by the mfg...Also go to your bios and disabled fastwrites and sideband adressing if available. wth is magic ball? Why such a nice pc and then you go n keep 3d onboard audio?

    Hiya!

Thanks! And thanks for the compliment on the PC. I waited a VERY long time to get it and I took suggestions DIRECTLY from THIS board on what to put into it. :)

NO I'm NOT overclocking at all! I've downloaded all available drivers for everything ..including XP and the MOBO etc. I've run THREE spyware programs and Mcafee ..nothing comes up. It's clean.

Secondly, the reason I stuck with onboard audio is because I basically ran out of money and figured I could upgrade that later. :(

6800LE? Does that mean it's bad ?? It cost me almost $300!!

I'm very into computers and I taught myself to build one but I'm not even going to pretend I know a lot about them. I just follow directions very well and I learn fast and I don't mind messing with settings if I have the right instructions. So where in BIOS am I looking EXACTLY?? Right now I have it set to Optimal settings so maybe you're right and I should Change some of them. Could you be more specific about which ones I should change??

Magic Ball is a stupid little addictive game I play on Real Arcade ...it's like Pong on Acid I think. LoL!! I've been taking a break from Children of the Nile because I can't figure it out enough to progress even though the graphics are AWESOME when they don't stick. And of course there's Sims 2 which again is GREAT on the eyes. But they both get boring. And I'm an adventure gamer so it's hard to find games now. :(

And again thank you both for your suggestions. :) I hope this can get resolved. I've never had a computer to run smoothly and I'm beginning to think it'll only happen in my dreams. :(

A 6800LE is a washdown "cheaper" version of a stanard 6800. In the MFG process some cards fail after certain speed; instead of discarding them into the recycle bin they use them as "Cheaper" alternatives, nothings wrong with them so to say but the speeds they can achieve is far less then what it was supposed to.

A standard 6800 runs for 280$-300$ and LE should run 200-250$. An LE has only 8 pipelines while the standard 6800 has 12 which means more bandwidth for you memory; also the core comes slightly underclocked with an LE (300mhz in most cases).

    LE - > http://www.newegg.com/app/searchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&Range=1&DEPA=0&bop=and&description=6800&srchFor=6800le

    Standard - > http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0

have you "gone to your bios and disabled fastwrites and sideband adressing if available."

    Good luck :D

Played a demo of children of the nile its pretty good / fun; try the new The Settlers: Heritage of Kings Demo . VERY beatifull to play and its an RTS with RPG elements. Pretty good game id say!

    Hiya!

Thanks for explaing that to me. I'm thinking I should sell the card I have now on ebay or something and get a better one. I waited too long to settle for less. Which one of those that came up at newegg.com do you recommend? I don't want to make a mistake this time.

I disabled ONE fastwrite option that I found in the BIOS but I didn't find anything else or any sideband addressing. :(

The PC is STILL STICKING!! GRRRRRRR!!

I'm downloading the demo for that game you suggested so I will let you know what it's like when it's done.

Thanks so much for taking the time out to help me. I'm told I have a good system and I shouldn't be upset with it. So why am I?? Why is it sticking?? Does everybody have sticking to some degree??

    Thanks again!!

That game ... "THE SETTLERS" is AWESOME!! VERY Beautiful!! Too bad I couldn't play it though. It was a NIGHTMARE with the skipping and freezing. Absolutely HORRID!! But the graphics were GORGEOUS!!

But the sputtering, skipping, freezing and sticking were GROSS!! Why oh WHY is my system doing this??

    Is it just me?

    I'm so depressed... :(

That sticking sounds really nutty; when you go into the BIOS and you look at the hardware monitor; the voltage reading from the PSU Are all good?[ie 12v reads v12.x).

Oh, is the 6800LE ON ITS OWN rail line? (ie from the PSU to the 6800 theres nothing eles attached)

Are there any hardware conflicts (ie IRQ conflicts) ?

For the diffrence you might get from a 6800LE>68000 Im not sure its worth going all the trouble of Ebay and all that stuff; just a lesson learned for the future :D .

Try the drivers from guru3d.com (67.20xp) Before you download driver cleaner 3.3 and remove the old nvidia drivers!

So then it's really not that BIG of difference in cards to go through the BS to sell it? Are you sure?? ;)

Ok what do you mean by the 6800 LE is on it's OWN rail line?? Please be more specific. I'm a bit clueless about this stuff ...for instance ...I've taught myself over the years so I've kinda given things MY OWN NAMES for stuff. Sorry for being so dumb. LoL! So just explain a bit more and I will be able to tell what you're talking about. Again I'm sorry for the frustration! :(

How do I find out if there are hardware conflicts? Is there a specific place to check? :D

I will get the drivers from Guru ...I already have driver cleaner ...so which drivers am I getting?? Nvidia graphics or board??;)

Anyway ...to help you ...I went ahead and wrote down ALL of my BIOS settings. I'm THAT desperate!! I can't stand the way the PC is acting. I've spent every piece of savings for the last 5 years to get this. I have a family of 3 small children so this took a LONG time to save up for and maybe I got my expectations too high but I thought it would run smoothly and make me giggle...:p

I can't say how much I APPRECIATE this!! Thank you sooooooooo MUCH!!

It seems the sticking is getting WORSE!! UGH!!!

    In your bios change

Primary VGA BIOS - PCI VGA Card to AGP VGA Card.

What i meant by "own rail line" was is the molex connector that goes to your video card directly from the PSU? as in its not split up and its going to a hard drive or some fans or somthing of that nature.

Download driver cleaner 3.3 and uninstall anything Nvidia -> http://www.drivercleaner.net/

Download and install the newest Nforce drivers for your motherboard from here -> http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10

Download the new video card drivers from here -> http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=934

You may want to download everything before you uninstall the Nvidia stuff.

To me it sounds like a video card driver issue. The NEW drivers they put out are NOT guaranteed to work with your pc. I installed NEW drivers and it wacked my pc something fierce, i was lucky enough to get them uninstalled and reinstall my one si uninstalled. You may have to try 2-3 different drivers, i would of stuck with what was out of the box, maybe try that and see if your pc sticks. And if it works, use them , lol. Goodluck.

  12. Omegamerc

No drivers are "guaranteed" to work; the drivers i linked her to are stable 67.20 for Wxp. The only diffrence is that they arent WHQL certified by microsoft labs, big whoop. The reason being you dont keep drivers off the cd or older sets that "stick" is because new ones ussally provide fixes for newer games and graphical improvements throughout; including glitch/bug fixings. I think her problem is beyond a driver issue.

  13. Omegamerc

    Omegamerc MajorGeek

Was also thinking....If you go (under bios) "Memory Frequency - Auto"

Can you change it to 200fsb and get a post (that beep your pc does)?

My computer was very unstable when my memory clock was at *auto* from the bios, since it put the freq at 166 instead of 200 which the memory is rated for.

Also is it possible if you remove 1x512 stick will the computer still stick w/the only 1 stick inside (and vice versa). Was thinking that your problem may not be your video card.

  14. Omegamerc

Oh and btw if at any time your computer DOES NOT post with the new settings ; look in your manual for a jumper to reset your bios information; if non is available just take out the cmos battery for a few minutes and pop it back in :D . Good luck!

Ok, might be a long shot but I've got an idea.

Anyway. I think it could be your NIC polling every few seconds to detect the network speed.

Anyway, as the instructions from TweakXP say,

    1.RightClick "MyComputer"
    2.Select "Manage"
    3.Click on "Device Manager"
4.DoubleClick on your NIC under "Network Adapters"
5.In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab
6.Select "Connection Type" and manuelly set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense" which is default.)
    7.You should reboot...

On that mobo the connection type is 100_FullDuplex, or if you have the updated chipset drivers from nVidia (which Omegamerc suggested), "Force 100 Full Duplex"

I've mainly seen this problems in laptops with wireless and wired NICs, but in one case ive seen it in a desktop. It's worth a try.

Does it only stick in games, or does it stick during normal usage too?

Needless to say, I'll leave Omegamerc to sort out your memory settings first, but once thats done I would try the above :)

Hiya - I think i might be in similar boat and just went out and invested in Geforce 6800LE. At first I thought it was memory or PSU issue but it turns out the 6800LE has some major issues - notably (and the one im getting all the time) is that the games will go to a black screen and freeze the machine or just restart it!

Im still hunting for a solution but is this similiar to your problems?

I noticed that in your BIOS you have the Graphics Aperture Size set to 64megs. Try setting it up to 128megs & see if that doesn't help.

I also agree with Omegamerc about "Memory Frequency - Auto" setting.

I am VERY familiar with your motheboard and all of the A7N8X's as I have owned 3 and built anohter 4 systems using them.

first, Disable Speech Post Reporter and Full screen logo show, as at least for now its nice to see your POST information.

set SYSTEM PERFORMANCE to User Defined.
for Memory Frequency, you want either [Sync] or [BySPD], which should both result in a 200mhz memory clock.

I'm guessing your Corsair RAM does a LOT better than 3-3-3-8 for the timings, so set Memory Timings to User Defined and try a CAS Latency of at most 2.5T, RAS recharge Delay 2, RAS to CAS Delay 2, and Active Precharge Delay to 7. These are still relaxed settings, but they seem more accurate. (you can actually look up the specific RAM timings of your model from corsair.)

Disable any spread spectrum, and as has been said, raise your Graphics Aperature size to 128MB.

Primary VGA BIOS should be AGP (as has been mentioned)

as for your Serial, Parallel, and Game ports, if you are not using them (and dont plan to) disable them so they do not use IRQ. if you dont have an older printer that uses the lare Parallel port, you are good to disable that.

also, i'd recommend running Memtest86+ available on MG HERE
to rule out the RAM as the problem.

if possible, try another video card--as has been stated, yours may be the problem.

good luck man! i know how bad it can feel when something doesnt work--but at least in the future you'll have a good idea what to do if something doesnt go right ;)

OMG!!! This day has been a NIGHTMARE!!! OMG!!! GRRR!!!

Ok so I used driver cleaner to undo the previous mobo drivers and graphic card. Then I made the HUGE mistake of rebooting BEFORE I installed the new ones. The system totally LOCKED ME OUT!!

It would get right past booting and then it would say that windows wasn't shut down properly so what do I want to do next? Go to safe mode or used previous known configuration ..etc. I would try ALL of them and then it would just RESTART!! I could NEVER get past that screen no matter what I did!!

So the only thing I was able to do after HOURS of trying to get in any way I could ...I had to REFORMAT my DRIVE!! So you can imagine how UPSET I was about that because NOTHING WAS BACKED UP!! I'm still feeling the sting from THAT!! ;(

Anyway, so I finally get it back up from scratch and I get everything loaded and then I go to driver clean and undo the Nvida drivers that I used on the disk that came with it. I install the new ones. And the same FREAKING THING HAPPENED AGAIN!! So I had to REFORMAT AGAIN!! UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

That's where I'm at now. I have the current drivers for the graphic card but I'm afraid to change the MOBO drivers cuz of what happened last time. I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo UPSET with this damned PC it's not even funny. I wasted my whole day on this thing and it hates me. :(

So I will try the BIOS changes now and the other suggestions and I will let you know what happens. If you don't hear back from me tonite it's cuz it had to be reformatted ..AGAIN!!

    Okies...

So I did all of the changes suggested in the BIOS and the ONE area that wouldn't work was the memory. When I changed all those settings from 3-3-3-8 to 2-2-2-7 and rebooted ...well the system wouldn't go. It did the same thing as earlier and just kept rebooting and rebooting and rebooting. I had to go in and change the settings back in order to boot up properly. But other than that ...all the other settings went through ok and I got the "beep" when the PC started. Where should I look up the actual settings for the memory?

I still have not changed the orginal mobo drivers. I've noticed that SOME sticking has stopped. It's not as frequent but it's STILL sticking! Is it normal?? Or should it always run smoothly??

Again thanks soooooooo much! I don't know what I would have done without ya'll! :)

I'll post back as soon as I know more. :D

if you give me the exact model number of your RAM, i can point you in the right direction. (if you still have any receipts from your purchase you can find the model there, or use a program like AIDA or Everest to view your system information)

i had recommended slightly higher RAM timings, since i don't know if you have CAS 2 or CAS 2.5 ram, but i DO know that its not CAS 3, so you'll be safe running 2.5 -2-3-7 most likely in the meantime

also, in order to do driver installation, here is what i do:
Reformat. insert driver disk, installing ONLY the secondary ethernet adapter driver (3com i believe).

once that is installed, you can download the latest drivers and install them straight off the bat, so theres no need to 'update' to the latest ones.

of course, I usually install an antivirus program like Avast! that i burn to a cd from another computer prior to installing the ethernet adapter and going online to be safe :p

Ok ~ So I'm STILL here and the PC hasn't locked me out yet. Thank the Gods!! LoL! :D

So here is what it says on my invoice for the memory:

    Item: RM - 140 - 102
    Description: CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 PC400 DDR (2) Qty

Is that what you needed?? And yes I've made sure the FSB is at 200mhz ..thank you for reminding me! :D

So why does the PC skip and Freeze?? It's NOTICABLY better now that I've reformated ...so it's NOT the hardware??

Try booting with only one stick of memory in the first slot. Boot the computer, and then run somthing. If it lags shut down, then move the memory dimm to the next slot. Reboot, and run a program. If lagging then shut down, and move the dimm again. If it is still lagging, after you have tied that same memory dimm in everyslot, put that dimm aside, and try the other one. Do the same process as above.

This will allow you to see if one of your memory dimms are bad or possibly one of the memory sockets in your motherboard is bad.

I'm gonna need a little more info than that, try downloading AIDA from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=181

when its open, under Motherboard on the left, click SPD, and then on the right under Device Description, it should tell you the model nname for your RAM (should be 10-12 characters long) :p

also, what drivers are you running with your card right now? initially, i had a LOT of driver trouble with my 6800GT being stable. I strongly recommend the 67.22 WHQL drives found at www.guru3d.com

Sorry for taking so long to post ...things have been CRAZY here! Ugh! And this computer just depresses me now when I'm around it. Nothing is helping. I tried that whole LOOONG process of taking out each memory stick and etc and nothing changed.

Everything is still skipping or sticking. Like video should be fluid but it's not ..it sputters and is choppy and SLOOOOW! It skips along. It's FRUSTRATING!! :(

Here's the info on the memory model: Corsair CMX512-3200C2

Thank you so much for that program ..it kicks ass!! ;)

Now what? Should I throw it in the pool and give up???

JUST KIDDING!! The damned thing cost me too much money for me to do that ...but OMG am I tempted! I think I'm just not meant to have a kickass computer. Who knows??

Oh yeah ~ About the Drivers ~ I'm running the ones that Omegamerc suggested earlier. :)

Silly question but; what resolution/settings are you running you games in?

also if you go desktop > properties > settings tab > advanced button >Geforce 6800LE tab > now there should be a tab on the left side, go down to Clock frequency settings > What speed does it show?

Would you be willing to click Manual Overclocking and click "detect optimal frequencies"?

Before you do this though; do you have your newest Nforce2 motherboard drivers? I never asked but did you ever get direct x 9.0c?
http://www.nvidia.com for nforce motherboard drivers (nForce platform > unified driver > wxp) and http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ for dx 9.0c.

Sure I'd be willing to click manual overclocking ...but I can't find it. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?? :(

Yes I have the newest drivers for the mobo, graphics card, xp and yes I have direct x 9c.

Let me know what to do next ... Thanks sweetie! :)

Going through all of this so far i would start to suspect a hardware problem. Does the computer only skip when u run a game? or is it skipping all the time. If only when a game is being played then there might be a problem with your graphics card. If its all the time the motherboard might be the culprit, but we still cannot rule out the graphicscard.

Where did you buy all ur parts from? Would it be easy for you to return a few components? If you can i would suggest that at this point if none of the above posts helped.

I'm noticing the problems when I'm watching video or gameplay ...I haven't noticed anything anywhere else ...YET. Like I said ..it's MUCH better now that I reformated.

I got the parts from www.cyberpowerinc.com and they SUCK!!! I already sent my first computer back for the same reasons!! Got a BRAND new motherboard ...upgraded it actually ...along with a NEW CARD another upgrade ...and MORE MEMORY and upgraded THAT to corsair. Cost me an extra $500 to do all that so I thought it would be worth it. I got it back right after thanksgiving and I didn't notice the problems right away. It took time.

Again ..it settled down since it's been wiped clean and started over but I haven't nearly loaded everything I want back onto the machine for fear I will lose it all again. So many I should start doing that. Maybe it's somewhere in there that makes things mess up?? I don't know. :(

    The temperatures are:

    Temperature Level - 57 degrees C
    Core Slowdown Threshold - 127 degrees C
    GPU Core Temp - 57 degrees C
    Ambient Temp - 37 degrees C

Is that good or bad???

57C? Is that IDLE? (ie you havnt been doing much of game/video for past 15mins). That sounds REALLY high for idling...my 6800GT OC (running 1090/390) is 48-50c idle and 52-54c load tops. Sounds like maybe its a crappy paste job on the core. But the core as far as i know can theoretically go all the way up to 120C and "surviving" ...but i highly doubt that one :). The only time I've experianced chopping/sluggishness is on my ati 9000 64mb mobile when i didnt give it enough room on my laptop to breathe (i had it on top of bed)

Well I was switching back and forth out of Children of the Nile while reading the baords...so maybe that's why it's so high ...dunno. :(

It's still not sticking as badly as it was but it IS dragging a bit and catching here and there. It's like it sputters every so often.

do you know what I mean??

I'm so sorry for being so frustrating ... :(

But thank you so much for your AWESOME patience ..ALL of you! :D

I think your last option really is to try if the card has the same problems on a 2ndary system; if it works fine on the other system then the problem is within the hardware of your pc and not the video card.

Change the IDE controller drivers back to the Windows default ones. You may have to force this.

57C isnt that bad, especially considering danger zone isnt till 115 or so...

mine idles between 49 (on a cold day) and 56, and under full load between 58-62. keep in mind mine is running 400/1100, but still... 57 is nothing to worry about.

    Ok...

I don't know what to do ...I don't have a secondary system to check it in. Does it sound like a video card problem??

So I've done all I can to fix this??

Again thanks tons for all the help. It's MUCH appreciated! :D

    Hi,

Could you tell us your cpu temp and mother board temp when you computer has been idle for at least 15 min.

In bios under advanced chipset features could you list the top 8 lines from cpu external freq to and including memory timings.

    Have you ran memtest86?

I would also run prime95 it tests cpu, ram, mobo, psu and heat it won't test video cards. If prime don't error then I would suspect a bad video card since trying different drivers have not fixed the problem. But before running prime list your temps and try memtest and post back.

One other question what dimm slots do you have your ram in?

I have the same board, different graphic and memory and suffered from similar problems when using the Nvidia IDE controller drivers.

Switching back to the Windows default drivers resolved my problem.

    Is it not worth trying?
