Wikipedia ? Please Explain

    I get the basic idea that Wikipedia is a dynamic online resource for information of all sorts. It's presence seems to have slowly and profoundly expanded on the internet - at least that is my experience. The popularity of this seems to be snowballing. So . . .

    What is the story behind Wikipedia? Who started it? Where is it going? I am really intrigued by it.


    I guess maybe I could reference "Wikipedia" on Wikipedia. Maybe I will give that a go. Thanks for any responses.
