Win32.Zbot and other problems

Having major problems right now with trojans and the like, specifically Win32.Zbot, which I'm unable to get rid of. Every time I run a scan it is found and subsequently removed, only to reappear after every reboot. This started a couple of weeks ago when my desktop background suddenly changed and I got fake security centre pop-ups; I ran a full scan - I think with Super Anti Spyware - and thought it had got rid of it. Over the past few weeks my PC has been running incredibly slow and strange processes keep appearing in the task manager and registry keys have been infected. Something called command.com also keeps attempting to open.
Subsequent scans with AVG, Malwarebytes and Spybot keep finding the same things over and over, which lead me here to try and get rid of them once and for all.

    I have taken all the steps advised in the Malware removal guide thread, with the exception of the following;
    - I cannot run CCleaner on the administrator account, as I am unable to recall the password
    - Super Anti Spyware is being blocked
    - Upon trying to run Combofix, it pops up with a warning telling me that AVG is still running (this happened twice) and I am getting a Windows pop-up telling me access is denied when I try to stop AVG's processes from running. I'm aware how powerful Combofix is, so I thought it best not to continue running it until I am told otherwise.

I have attached Malwarebytes, RootRepeal and MGTools logs.

Many thanks in advance for any help provided,

    Tony.

Use your other admin account (Kit) to change the password for the Administrator user account. ;)

Since you are EXTREMELY out of date with Malwarebytes, I'm going to assume you may be way out of date with SUPERAntiSpyware too. Thus please do the below.

    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.
Now run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Attach the new log.

Since you have some serious issues which we need combofix to fix, please uninstall AVG and do the below. We will have to wait to a second round to create the final fix with ComboFix since you did not get it to run this first pass. One of your infections could be breaking your ability to connect to the internet if it has not done so already.

First I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 10

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqydafk.exe
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdygw.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdra64.exe,
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSxmlHpr] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxm192z.dll,w
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IgfxSys] rundll32.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\Kit\Application Data\Messenger\Drivers\IgfxSys.dll",StartProtector
    O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [exec] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbkoh.exe
    O9 - Extra button: AIM - {AC9E2541-2814-11d5-BC6D-00B0D0A1DE45} - C:\PROGRA~1\AIM\aim.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: avast!antivirus - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\avast!Antivirus.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kit\Local Settings\Temp

Now see if you can run ComboFix per the original instructions.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new logs for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\combofix.txt if it ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks so much for helping me with this mess, I really, really appreciate it.

I did all you said and have attached logs. I had to run Super Anti Spyware last as it was still being blocked and kept crashing my PC up until the last attempt. I don't know if this will affect anything.
    The only thing I couldn't do was to delete all the files you mentioned using MGtools analyse. I bolded the only file that existed in the list it gave me;

I was able to run ComboFix fine, and everything seems to be better. I am now getting a constant application error from something called WMPNetwk.exe but that's all that seems to be happening.

    Thanks again,

    Tony.

You did not follow my instructions for installing the new version of SUPERAntiSpyware. Thus you still have an older version. SUPERAntispyware does not update that program version unless you uninstall it which I consider a design flaw. It only updates the detection databases when you run their update. You should still do this and run a new scan just to be safe.

Your ComboFix log is still showing things we deleted with Avenger so let's run another fix to be on the safe side here too.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I did follow your instructions. I uninstalled SAS. I downloaded the latest version that you linked me to. I installed this.
I am running version 4.27.1002, which their website tells me is the latest version.

I have attached the two logs as requested.

    Many thanks,

    Tony.

But look at what I'm going by! In message # 3 you attached the log after I requested a new one and the log shows the below
which is why I assumed you did not install the current version. Apparently you attached an old log and not a new one.

Your logs are clean but you need to restore a copy of a missing Windows file that ComboFix pointed out. You are missing the C:\windows\system32\proquota.exe file. You can get a copy from the below location and copy it to your system32 folder:

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\proquota.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
