    O.k so was going good:p with a 98se build of an;

    HP Vectra VL 400 DT
    Mobo P/N: 9820-60007
    D/C:0032 - no idea what this is about but was on a same sticker above the Revision id (REV below)
    REV:1D

    Have an issue with the audio drivers, none of the drivers from the offical HP site have worked, despite documentation indicating that it is for this model.

    So I tried downloading there Hp autodetect software, which helped with a couple of unkown devices, but not with the audio, not only that it seems to have some how partially uninstalled the executble and some installed files for the anitivirus Bitdefender 10...which I have to admit I am not to fond of...this sent the alarm bells ringing.

    Can anyone advise please on the correct driver for this make of unit, re - please dont direct me back to the HP website drivers as these dont appear to work.:cry

    Thanks world:wave

    According to the HP site, the PC uses a Crystal 429x audio chip. To confirm this, you'd be best off running Everest and attaching the report to a future post, or open the case (unplug the power cord first!) and look at the sound chip, but if you're not familiar with the layout of older motherboards, you may not know which chip is which. Anyway- if HP is right (the big makers do make mistakes) and you do have CS429x sound chip, try using the driver I attached below (it's zipped). Download it, unzip it, and use the Device Manager/New Hardware Wizard to install the driver by 'pointing' the wizard to the extracted (unzipped) folder. If this doesn't work, please use the info in this thread to create and upload an Everest report, and we'll go from there.

    Good Luck!
    :-D

    (I found another driver at this link that has the setup.exe that the driver below does not and may be easier to install)

    Thank you sooo much dlb:cool:wave

    Will try this out. I too was of the thought process that its unusual for the major players (HP/Compaq) to have messed this up, I had just came across others in my search that had also experineced difficulties. Had checked the mobo fro audio chip although nothing stood out as the sound chip - not easy id that is.

    Will post back the results of this, incase others have this querry.

    Thanks DLB, the zip worked a charm:cool;) no issues.:major

    Also as an update to other people viewing this or on a similar journey, you may require external speakers for this model to produce audio.:wave
