We are running a Windows 2003 server, SP1 and are unable to update to SP2.

We have downloaded WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU.exe from the Microsoft website, and the executable will extract the files into a temporary directory on the server. When this process has finished instead of the install kicking off the dialogue box closes and the temporary directory disappears.

There are no events logged in the event viewer.

We have noticed that the Service Pack files are being extracted to E:\ instead of C:\ where the operating system and SP2 executable are.

The environment variables are all pointing to c:\ and we are logged on using a local admin account.

I'm not too sure what you mean by "Destination folder". The file was downloaded and saved to the hard drive and then launched. There is no executable in the extracted files.

I think the issue must be with the server itself as we are also unable to run the update using the windows update tool. The update fails almost immediately and the error code recorded is 0x80242000.

Many thanks for your help. We will log the issue with Microsoft.
