Hi I have my friends hp Laptop windows 7 Home premium 64 bit with 8gig memory is running cpu at 100% whenever any browser is used. I did do the malware thread on this forum to see if that was the issue once we did that I was pointed to here. I also did some other things like cleanup disk, defrag and ran updates ect. Still I have the high CPU Issues when ever any Internet browser is running.

Any help would be awesome !

    Thanks

Is it the browser using 100% CPU?
    What does Task Manager show?

Here I will give you a snap shot. But actually if I use IE Or Firefox the cpu goes way up.

Some websites/pages have a lot of 'stuff' loading. Minimize Task Manager to the notification area and keep an eye on it.

Most of the cause is the plugin container.exe this is a major resource hog from firefox. There is no new way to disable it unless you don't want to watch videos on the net.

Next time you use firefox watch the plugin container.exe spike to 30% up to 50%.

As soon as i saw plugin container.exe in your list i knew what the main issue is.

You are better off going to a off brand of firefox.

Completely remove it and save your links.

And install Cyberfox same thing but better modified.

Check the box in the corner of TaskMan to show Processes from All Users, it's more likely to be the SVCHost for Windows Update that's the problem.

I have been seeing spikes from SVCHost as well from windows 10.Mine will spike between 10 to 25% when watching some thing.

As already said it needs to be 'show processes from all users' that's why, in that screenshot, there is no CPU spiking seen. RAM is not the same.
Clean up and defrag in Windows 10 wont do anything significant.

BTW, you can't expect any program to use 0% CPU when you're actually doing *something* with it: when you open a new page, FF has to use the CPU and it will spike the %, the less powerful your CPU is, the higher that spike will be, probably for a longer duration as well.

Fast, high core count CPU: shorter, lower spikes. Slower, low core count CPU: higher spikes of longer duration. Both CPUs have to do the same amount of work.

If you have a reasonably modern graphics card or iGPU/APU, you might reduce the CPU spikes by enabling hardware acceleration in the browser and Flash, if you haven't already done so. This offloads some of the processing to the GPU when applicable.

Thanks for the comments. I have the cpu spike with both browsers IE and FF it does not matter actually. Also SVCHost is an issue. I tried going into flash player and right clicking the logo to uncheck it but it would not let me do that. How do I enable hardware acceleration?

If Enable hardware acceleration is checked in the Settings Flash player tab (Right-click the video player > Settings > Display (left tab)), it's on, uncheck it to disable it (will probably hit the CPU more).

If you don't want Flash to play automatically on opening a page (it can be a privacy/security/distraction issue as well as hitting your CPU and slowing things down), go to your Add-ons (in Firefox > (Alt) Add-ons > Plugins and change the setting to Ask to activate in the dropdown menu for Flash (and Silverlight, any other player plugins you might have). With this setting, you click on the blank video to get a dropdown that you can click to Allow Now (for untrusted sites) or Allow and Remember (for those few sites that you really trust).

If you right-click on the SCVHost Process, and then click Show Services, the Services that are highlighted are those that are using that Process, get a screen grab of them, including the TaskMan frame (useful info shown in the lower border) and we'll try to work out what's happening.

What video player are you talking about?

Also what is interesting is it does not give me an option in plugins to change it to ask me. Here is what is in my plugin list. Open H624 Video Codec Provided by Cisco systems wont let me turn it to ask me. Primetime Content Decryption Module Provided by adobe Systems wont let me set it to let me activate it. Widevine Content Decrption Module by google will also not let me turn to let me activate it. Silver light it let me turn it to let me activate along with Shockwave aslo let me change it to let me activate.

Okay in the task manger with ajusting the one plugin I see the cpu jump from one up to 50 on ff. It is spastic it does the same with IE when it is on,

You need to post a screenshot of Task Manager > Processes > Show processes for ALL users > when the CPU is actually spiking

In post #14 it relates to Flash Player

    Hardware acceleration:
    Flash:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337
    Firefox:
    Tools > Options > Advanced > General
    IE
Internet Options > Advanced > Accelerated graphics

The (Shockwave) Flash video player in the browser page.

You can't expect to do anything without having the CPU kick in to accommodate it. Notebook CPUs especially (for battery/power saving purposes), have quite low minimum speeds when inactive, maybe only 800Mhz, as soon as you 'do' something, the CPU kicks into action and the TaskMan graph jumps up - if that something requires more than minimal power, the CPU then ramps up to the rated speed, which might be 3-4 times higher than the 800MHx baseline.

It's easier to see this with the graph on the Resource Monitor CPU tab (button on the TaskMan Performance tab), here's mine. The blue line is the CPU frequency, it's mostly 'resting' at just above the minimum, 1.6GHz, with the monitor active, as soon as I scrolled down the monitor's CPU list, the CPU was 'asked' to work harder to accommodate it and the frequency (blue line) rose above 3GHz in response. The action was brief, so the CPU and frequency both quickly dropped to resting speeds.

    CPU frequency jump.jpg

It's unlikely that your CPU is as powerful as this one, so your CPU and frequency rises would be higher (3-4x?), for longer, doing the same thing. But that's normal and expected.

It's quite normal, especially with notebooks and lower spec PCs, to see relatively high CPU activity for relatively little 'obvious' activity, they're not so powerful and need to run harder for longer to do the same work.

(Note that using Resource Monitor will increase the CPU%, it's doing a lot of work in the background, as well as displaying real-time graphics/stats.)

Not sure what you mean. I tried to go to flashplayer and right click and uncheck it but it would not let me. Unless you know of another way that would be great.

Oh okay well I was concerned because it was slowing my friend computer way down because it was hot. So I was trying to help her solve the issue since I was note knowledgeable about computers then she was. I am finding I am learning. lol

When Flash is being used - eg when a news video is playing - RIGHT CLICK > SETTINGS

'Heat' is likely to be a different issue.

Heat would mean that you need to get a A can of air and dust it out to help with the heat problem.

But you can all ways get a cooling pad to.

High processor usage can cause and/or be a contributing factor to overheating issues, especially on a laptop.

Techwoman. Just one thing about svchost.exe issues. If you completely turn off Windows updates in Windows 7, there is a 90% or better chance that it will end the problems with processor usage by svchost.exe. Updates for Windows 7 are slowed to a crawl by all the Windows 10 downloads, and svchost continually runs trying to connect. I have had updates off on 3 PCs for the last year, and not once has svchost barfed despite the fact that it was doing so about half the time on all three PCs before then.

I think this might help with your Firefox issue, so please give it a try and see what happens. Boot one time after turning off Windows updates. svchost is a wrecking ball and generally horribly designed. Hopefully, this will resolve the heating issue also, although there could be other contributing factors, such as those mentioned. If you still have that problem afterwards, please post back...

Ok and by the way I did dust the computer three days ago. Yes I will do that thanks for the tip.
