Hi guys, thanks in advance for all your help. I followed all the steps exactly, switching back and forth from safe mode to regular as necessary. The only log I wasn't able to attach is CounterSpy. When the scan was finished, it only told me what was infected, what was cleaned up, and what wasn't. There were no other buttons on the window (in safe mode).. there was no VIEW button anywhere.. PLEASE help me!!! I got this infection just from VISITING packetnews.com. I'm always safe about downloads and stuff, and I've never had trouble like this before. Thanks again!!

You did not follow the instructions in step 7 of the READ ME.
    • The version of HijackThis that you are using has not been used in over 3 years
    • Also you must install HijackThis properly. You have it installed exactly where we specify not to install it
    • You must also rename it as requested in step 7 which is crucial for proper operation
Then attach a new HJT log.

Also you did not uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in step 0. Please uninstall it now.

Thanks, and sorry for overlooking that. I uninstalled Viewpoint and here is my new hijackthis log.

I noticed you are running this PC with no protection! That is a very bad idea as your current infections prove.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ddcyv.dll
    jkkkhij.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ddcyv.dll
    jkkkhij.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ddcyv.dll
    jkkkhij.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O1 - Hosts: 85.17.40.69 tracker.oink.me.uk
    O1 - Hosts: 85.17.40.70 irc.oink.me.uk

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcyv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyv.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkkhij - jkkkhij.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

OK I think I got it. The only step I changed was I did not fix the following from hijackthis:

    O1 - Hosts: 85.17.40.69 tracker.oink.me.uk
    O1 - Hosts: 85.17.40.70 irc.oink.me.uk
    O1 - Hosts: 85.17.40.71 oink.me.uk

Oink is a torrent program I've used for quite some time now, and is not the problem.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!! Please let me know if these logs look ok...

Yes I know what Oink is and I know it was not related to your immediate major malware issues (although downloading from it could be the root cause). There is just no reason to put those lines in your hosts file. Those URLs are exactly the same as the IP addresses being used in the host file so it serves no purpose. I would expect things to work just fine without them unless there is something strange about Oink. It is rare that anything needs to be put into the hosts file and putting too much in there gives malware an easy hiding place.

Uninstall the CounterSpy trial now since we are finished with it.

You picked up some addition infected files in between the time you posted the first logs and running my fix.

    1. Avenger
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Thanks again! Seriously I would really be lost without you, talking on the phone with tech support to some guy who I can barely understand!!! Here's my new logs, I had no problem making them. Also, I'm sure I got this infection from the site I mentioned (packetnews), not mp3's I downloaded from oink. Two questions for you, if you dont mind...

Since infection, the background to the text of icons on my desktop have been a solid color. I dont know why or how this happend, but I cant figure out how to change them back to transparent (where you just see the text and not the background color) like they were before.

Second, which anti-virus program do you recommend? I'm not opposed to one, but I hated the norton antivirus that came loaded on this computer when I bought it. I found it to be processor intensive, and I HATED the constant pop-ups asking me to buy their shit.

    Thanks!

I'll give you two things to look at.

    1. Right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Then click the Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.
    2. Click Start > Control Panel > System. Click the Advanced Tab, then under the Performance section click the Settings button. Try changing the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option. If checked, uncheck it.
    Did that change anything?

In my final steps given below you will find links to several good free antivirus programs. I recommend you give AVG a try.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Neither worked. The background around the TEXT of the icons (not the actual icons themselves) is still a solid color. I DID find something strange in the customize desktop menu. It was set to display this file: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\didobywuy.html

    I deleted it. Thanks again.

I had you delete this file back in message number 5.

I think about this some more and if anything comes to me I will post it. It sounds familiar. I remember one time someone complaining of a blue shadow around their icons but that I believe was just due to having the Desktop locked which I already suggested that you check.

Another member of the forums (thanks abri) mentioned that in non-English versions of Windows there is another option that you can set. Try this one:

Click Start > Control Panel > System. Click the Advanced Tab, then under the Performance section click the Settings button. Try changing the "Transparent background for icon labels on the desktop" option. If unchecked, check it.

    Did that change anything?

That option wasn't in the list. However, I fixed the problem by selecting "Adjust for best appearance" , instead of "Custom" above the scroll down box. Doesn't make much sense to me, since it looks like that option just selected them all, but it worked! Thanks again everyone for all your help!

Do you remember which options were not checked (other than the Use drop shadows option I had you uncheck as a test)?

Actually i'm pretty sure they were all checked.

Okay! Well than I'm not sure what changed but at least it had the desired effect and it was just some kind of system setting and not malware which was the main thing I wanted to find out.
